Restaurants and shopping

The main strip in Sanibel has most of the interesting shopping centers - no chains - and restaurants on this end of the island. Park and walk the strip.

Hopefully you'll have no problems but it can be a busy place full of 2 lane roads. After being blocked in every direction for an hour we gave up and went back to the hotel to eat. Sorry local restaurants and poor police that have to direct traffic, especially in the rain.

We aren't bikers so we're stuck with using our car or our feet to get around. During high season Periwinkle Way requires patience! As our accomadations were on PW we tried to walk as much as possible--to restaurants, the grocery, etc.,

There are only two main road ways on sanibel, and these are narrow to drive, also bikers and folks walking have the right away, so do be careful.

This is the main street through the island from the causeway to the middle part of the island. It's 2 lanes and at peak times, traffic is terrible. There are a number of restaurants along it, ranging from Dairy Queen to fine dining places like The Jacaranda and Sweet Melissa's Cafe. Also a lot of places for shopping and services... More

Sounds nice, no traffic lights, but not so much. The traffic is very slow, difficult getting in and out of stores so we didn't venture into many. Lot's of people on bicycle's. They have the right of way and will pull out in front of you and then yell at you. There are 2 traffic cops directing the flow of... More

Clean, fresh and attractive. Lovely drive, pleasing by NOT being littered by a ton of signage. Delightful amount of shopping, local businesses, quaint, low, attractive buildings with a variety of selections. VERY pleasing!

Need it? Want it? Periwinkle Way has it! Grocery store? Check! A variety of restaurants to appeal to all tastes and budgets? Yep. We had a wonderful lunch at Island Cow in the delightful Periwinkle Place outdoor mall. Are you a Chicos fan? Guess what? THE ORIGINAL Chicos store is located here! Yes, I certainly did my part for Florida's... More

We not only enjoyed the many shops to wander through but it wasn't crowded yet! We also were able to get a nice dinner there also.

Bumper to bumper, slow moving traffic on a Tuesday in January. God help you if you decided to get off the road and venture into the many shops along the way - nobody would let you back in line!
