Actually the St. George Lighthouse was rebuilt by volunteers after it fell into the Gulf of Mexico. Relocating it to the main entrance at St. George Island visitors can now climb the steps to the top and also visit the museum in the innkeeper cabin. St. George Island is justifiably proud of its history and the role its lighthouse has played in its history. The relatively new lighthouse museum is free and well worth a visit, and after learning about the lighthouse you'll want to pay the nominal fee to climb to the top.

After a disappointing visit to the lighthouse at Cape San Blas, I told my son we would find another. I found this one. It had a really neat little park around it. My children loved the playground - this is where we burned off some energy after Aunt Ebbys Ice Cream and before biking back to the Plantation. Certainly recommend seeing this park.

We had fun climbing the lighthouse and talking with the woman in the gift shop. The view from the top was terrific, and the climb (92 or 96 or 98 steps) really wasn't bad at all
