If in St. Augustine take the time to stop

We stopped here on our way home from St. Augustine. Loved the ferry ride and the history. Make sure you find out ferry times before you go so you don't have to wait.

A ferry ride to the fort with the opportunity to see manatees, dolphins, and sea turtles. The fort itself is small and located on Rattlesnake Island. Due to the ferry ride the time at the fort is limited. We were on the first tour of the day (10:30) with plenty of open seats. The next tour was much heavier attended.

Located about 20 minutes or so from downtown St. Augustine. This small fort was the first defense in protecting the city. Located in the Matanzas River, off the southern tip of Anastasia Island, the fort is reached by a five minute ferry ride which departs on the half hour. Short enough ride and tour (45 minutes) for children. No food... More

We took the back roads from Daytona up to St Augustine along the water. Much more interesting. Came across the Fort and stopped. We took the tour which was very informative and interesting. We learned allot and helped us understand the history better for this part of our country. Would recommend it to anybody. Boat ride to the Fort is... More

When visiting family in St Augustine,Fl a few years back, I had the pleasure of exploring much of the beautiful city. The Fort was amazing. So much history. All of the staff do an excellent job in telling of the history of the Spanish and the British. Will again return to explore more of St Augustine and all of it's... More

Visiting the fort is fun and the boat trip across the river is fun for the kiddies. The rangers do a great job educating visitors about the history and cultural perspectives of the early settlers. However, the spiritual, physical, and emotional beauty of Matanzas is its beach. Imagine 15 miles or more of a wide and flat beach. The slope... More

Structure with loads of history. Especially liked the cannon firing re-enactment and the exhibits. The "soldiers", dressed in period uniform, were especially knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The entrance fee was very reasonable. An hour and thirty minutes well spent.

This is a wonderful place to visit for a half day. The guides were very friendly and knowledgable. The boat ride was safe and comfortable. The Fort was very historic, and had beautiful views. The bathrooms, were spotless! Spend the morning here, and then go to the beach across the street.
