We went at a busy time of year. It was really crowded. The cannon was pretty cool when it went off. A lot of walking and climbing. Not for strollers, or those in wheelchairs.

Fort Matanzas is a small fort a few miles down the road from Saint Augustine. Nice break from the crowds in town. There is a ferry out to the island/fort so plan on waiting if you mis-time your arrival or if the trip you planned on is full. Not much to do on the mainland whilst you wait for your... More

The layout of the fort and scenic views are amazing. Fortunately we got to hear someone dressed in the costume of the time, give a little history about the fort. Most interesting thing in the fort are the carvings on the walls.

If you love history, you will love this old fort. Since St Augustine is the oldest city in the US, this is a very old fort!! It shows how those soldiers had to make due with what they had to live day to day. Very interesting, would definitely recommend!!

Being a history buff I love visiting the Fort and watching the re inactment that they put on. The Fort overlooks the bay to protect the City.

Fort Matanzas National Monument is a fun filled historical visit by ferry to a small fort steeped in history that guarded the south entrance to St. Augustine. Be sure to watch the 8 minute video at the visitor centre prior to catching the ferry over to Rattlesnake Island; the location of the fort. Ferries leave every half hr. US National... More

Visiting the monument and taking the boat over were a great way to spend an afternoon. The guides were very informative and being able to climb into the fort and see what life would have been like there, really helped to put the history of the settlement of St Augustine into perspective. A very worthwhile afternoon stop. Even enjoyed waiting... More

A lot of history packed into one area. Great place to stop and soak up some St. Augustine history. My entire family enjoyed the visit. Parking outside required a few circles around the parking lot to get a spot from a departing visitor, but don't let that discourage you from visiting.

This is a fun and FREE activity, great for families and children. Boarding passes for the ferry boat are handed out on a first come first served basis. The boat can take 36 passengers at a time over to the fort, and there is a ferry scheduled every hour on the half hour (for example: 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, etc.) Once... More

Having worked for the NPS for 16 years with 7 years at the front desk of a visitor center I have a pet peeve about unpleasant rangers. So after reading the visitor sign in book and seeing the comment, "mean ranger," I knew it wasn't just me. We were driving back to MD from Disney and I wanted to visit... More
