If you are traveling in the Florida Panhandle, or the Gulf Coast of Alabama you don't want to miss a visit to Fort Pickens located on Santa Rosa island. Re-open and better than ever since Hurricane Ivan closed most access a few years back. You can swim, fish and tour the great Old Forts. The only draw back to this... more

Fort Pickens is very rustic and expansive. You are free to roam around most parts of the grounds and all of the main fortificaton. The main fort is very mysterious and left just the way it was. The park also includes a campground and beaches. The beaches are fantatic and not crowded at all. The sand is white and the... more

The beach road to Ft. Pickens opened the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Many are traveling out the road to visit the Ft. Some are camping and enjoying our lovely, pristine white sand beaches! Come on down and see the real Florida! more

Visited Fort Pickens May, 17, 2009. The road has been rebuilt and is open to bicycles and walkers. It is 5.5 miles from the parking lot to the campground. The road is closed M-F, 8-5 because construction is still underway. There is no electricity or hot water but the showers and toilets are working. Six campsites were occupied Saturday. There... more

We spent half a day there in July/2008. I wish we had more one more night so we could have camped out. It's a very very secluded campgrounds. There are a bathroom/shower and water fountain near the Park Ranger's house and fishing piers. The piers are in great condition with all kinds of fish in the water. We only had... more

Hurricane Ivan happened almost 3 yrs. ago. The most beautiful and private beaches are on the peninsula to Fort Pickens. As of yet the state of Florida has not repaired the road to Fort Pickens, so the beaches are not obtainable. We the locals are very disappointed, we feel the state has had enough time. Fort Pickens is also a... more

we took an after dark tour of Fort Pickens. It was pretty neat, you have a guide telling you about everything. The bugs were TERRIBLE! BRING BUGSPRAY! I'm serious. We didn't have any on us, and we got eaten alive. The drive to fort pickens is beautiful.(along the seashore-lots of undeveloped land!) more

The fort apparently has tours, but the road is currently under construction and is closed. You must park seven (7) miles from the fort. Parking is at a comfortable beach spot, but from there your options are to walk, or preferably ride a bike (bring plenty of water) the round trip of 14 miles. Pets are not allowed & very... more

Fort Pickens was great. Me and my family went there only in August. There was this cool part with a barrel where you pick up the barrel lid and you can actually hear the sounds of the civil war. At first me and my sister were scared but when we did it again we knew what was happening. Also the... more
