The park has two ravines up to 120 feet deep with steep banks at 45 degree angles. Unlike common gullies, trenches or sinkholes caused by temporary flooding, the steephead ravine is a permanent feature with a spring-fed creek that never dries up, called Whitewater Branch. The underground water bubbling up cuts into the bank and carries the sand and soil downstream to the St. Johns River. Over thousands of years the ravine has widened and deepened to what you see today. In 1933, this ravine was transformed into a dramatic garden by the federal Works Progress Administration. Much of the original landscaping still exists as formal gardens and an extensive trail system. A 1.8-mile paved road winds around the ravine, offering motorists and bicyclists a view of the gardens. The Ravine Loop is closed to vehicle traffic one hour before sunset, but remains open for pedestrians, bicycles, and wheelchairs. The garden's peak flowering period is azalea season, late January to April. Numerous picnic sites, equipped with tables and grills, are available to visitors. The Roy E. Campbell Civic Center complex features a large covered pavilion, auditorium, and meeting rooms that are available for rent. Located in Palatka at 1600 Twigg Street.

My husband and I loved this place. It's quite beautiful and an excellent place for a walk, run or hike. It's also wonderful for photography. There is a $5 per car entrance fee - you're on your honor to pay it. There was just a locked box, no one in the booth. I love that they have a 1.8 mile... More

The ravine state gardens in Palatka is probably the city's best kept secret. The ravine is an all natural experience with a surrounding drive way and plenty of intriguing hiking trails. Very fun outing!!!

Visited with my husband, 18 yr old daughter and our dogs last June. Lovely trails, just be careful by the pond/lake edges with any pets, caught a gator swimming around.

The 1.8 mile path winds around a forested area with a pond/stream? at the bottom. You cannot swim as it's posted for possible alligators. There are lots of side paths you can take off the main road that bring you back out to the road. Some are fun to explore - as we did. I would suggest wear bug spray... More

Ravine State Gardens is a beautiful spot to visit and spend some time enjoying nature. It is particularly lovely in the Spring when all of the flowers are beginning to bloom. The walk to the bottom of the ravine can be challenging and is not for someone who is mobility impaired, but the road that runs around the park is... More

My hubby and I have an annual pass for the Florida state parks and we come here all the time. There are trails in the ravines, a couple of suspension bridges, lots of picnic areas, beautiful scenery, lots of shade, plenty of places to take pictures, a nice little playground, a nice driving, walking, biking loop around the ravines and... Ravine State Gardens is a hidden gem in Palatka! We love to roam the trails (esp when the azaleas are blooming) and is hilly enough to feel a little bit like back home up North.

My family and I (2 adults, 6 y/o and 22 y/o) visited Ravine state Gardens this past weekend! It was the best day we had!! Go in the morning during the summer, and don't drive the trail, walk it if you're able! Walked about 1/10 of a mile and found a set of stairs and never got back on the... More
