the beach had tons of seaweed making it difficult to enjoy the water. the lady renting the chairs and umbrellas was a total witch. we came from the cruise with another family of 4 who rented 4 chairs for $40. they told us we could use theirs because they weren't going to stay long and not to throw our $... I came to Key West knowing that the island was NOT known for it's beaches. We rode our bikes over to Higgs beach, with knowing what to expect. However, even with lower expectations, this beach still disappointed! It is a bit sketchy and there are quite a few homeless people hanging out. Doesn't seem like they bother anybody, but probably... Spent an afternoon at Higgs Beach during a recent visit to Key West. I liked the feel of the place - not touristy or a lot (any!) of little shops selling overpriced postcards and assorted schlock. Just a nice, fairly quiet place to soak up some sun and relax. The sand is not overly fine, and I suggest some type... More

This "beach" was not very well kept and seems like it may be reclaimed from some former industrial site. There is a pier, but the beach proper is very rocky, hard to get out to the water. We had heard you may be able to snorkel here, but that was not the case. The water is way too murky, full... More

I am an optimist. Yesterday I read through reviews about this beach, noting that the majority were positive. My son REALLY wanted to snorkel, and along the old pier sounded promising. I realize that weather affects clarity of water, but today was nice and just a little breezy. The water was so murky we couldn't see three inches in front... More

We went to all the beaches. This was the best. You can walk on the beach and get in water without shoes.

Higgs Beach is a regular stop when we visit Key West. The beach is not expansive, but it is a very clean beach, and the water is the perfect color and temperature to encourage beachgoers to take a plunge. It is so refreshing and a high point of each visit.

With the calm and clear blue water along with white sand.. this looked very exotic to me.... and pretty affordable too.. like renting the snorkeling gear ( the clear warm water is real temptation) and even the beach chairs and umbrellas..I didn't quite expect that... Miami south beach should learn something from them.. Since most of the Key West beaches... More

I spent a great morning at this gorgeous beach! The water was warm and clear, the beach was clean and it was free! There were lots of fish to see if you snorkel out by the pier. You can also buy snorkel gear from the hut that rents beach chairs and umbrellas ($20 for 2 chairs and an umbrella). There's... More

Nice sandy beach with facilities. Free parking. Long pier (no fishing here) so you can see fish in crystal clear water. Looks like a good snorkeling here (we did nor snorkel, water was a little cold for us in March). Good for babies and everybody else, shallow and no waves.
