Nice beach to experience key west ocean

Went on a whim and it was pretty smelly but very natural. We bought cheap snorkeling stuff at CVS. There are fish swimming around all over by the pier that goes out (which you can... read more

We took a day and visited all the beaches in KW, this was the clearest and best. This beach didn't have as much rock to walk on in the beach area or seaweed. They had a pier to walk out onto and restaurant and park nearby.

There are more facilities here but no sand. We looked at this beach and went down to Smathera beach. It's tons better as far as entry into the water and sand. Not as rocky. I've checked Higgs off my list no need to go back.

Went on a whim and it was pretty smelly but very natural. We bought cheap snorkeling stuff at CVS. There are fish swimming around all over by the pier that goes out (which you can jump off of). The water is beautiful. Loved the natural sea grass and all the different kinds of fish. Not something you see every day... More

However there is a problem with washed up stagnant sea weed, the smell is terrible, they should really clean it up! However the beach is so nice, the water is about 85 Degrees, yum

Higgs beach is probably by far the best beach in Key West. Mind you there not a lot of options available to you, but it takes all your worries away, at least for the day. Great sand bar, good snorkeling!

So after being told that Higgs beach is better than the other beaches in the area we ended up here after going to Fort Zach. The beach here is right off the street, with no admission and dare I say, it's better than the beach at the fort. Sure, it's free which makes things better but the beach isn't as... More

Water is usually quite clean and clear. Can also swim off pier, steps down to water. There are chairs etc to rent if you want. There's vending machines, a nice restaurant , bathrooms, very nice kids park. Small beach. Sometimes with right currents and wind seaweed comes in, then walk out pier go down steps and swim beyond the sea... More

I've had better snorkeling experiences on this beach than some of the snorkeling trips out to the reef. The beach has a decent amount of (imported) soft white sand- and you can see tons of tropical fish just from walking out onto the pier. When I was here 2 years ago, we saw a manatee swimming next to the pier.... More

Lots of seaweed to walk through before you get to the waters edge, but still refreshing. We've seen more wildlife (fish and marine animals, not people!!.. ok, well, people too) here snorkeling than on a dive/snorkel trip out to the reef. There are pilings that fish frequent as well as sea grass beds where you just might find some interesting... More

This is just another of Key Wests many average to below average beaches. If is ok to check it out as a historic place but the beach itself leaves a lot to be desired! Terrible snorkeling, murky water, crowded and not a pleasant diversion at all. Avoid it.
