Takes about 3 hours from Miami but if you are someone who would prefer to do it in 5 or 6 hours, you are going to love it. Stop along the way OFTEN!.
it's not much road but the speed limit is like 40mph so it takes a while. we made the drive on a whim and it made for a long day, if I had it to do over I'd stay the night out there.
I LOVE the overseas highway! There is so much to look at, I especially love viewing the old highway, at parts there is vegetation growing on it, birds perched, etc. There are a few turnoffs where you can pull off the highway to sit by the ocean and watch boats, which I recommend you take advantage of.
We traveled with a group from Miami to Key West a while back. It is a much longer drive than a map or navigation device leads you to believe (slow travel and two lane roads). The second half of the drive is by far the most scenic. If your final destination is Key West, and you would like to experience... More
Take your time and drive this historic highway through the keys from Miami. You can see parts of the old railroad as you travel. Learn about Henry Flagler and how he built this at the Railway Museum in Key West. My husband and I had not driven since 1976 so much has changed with the new bridges. Stop near Pigeon... More
It seems strange to review this since it was pretty much essential to the trip, but it was quite a nice drive, I'll say. If you are going to drive around the keys at all, you will get to experience this road.
I had had nightmares about travelling over this and being overtaken by a tidal wave! I HAD to conquer my fear! In the end it was nothing like I had expected. Just another LONG road. And there were traffic accidents and construction to deal with! The scenery was nice but the next time I get the urge to go to... More
As it turned out, perhaps, this was the part we really enjoyed most during our holiday. The ride along The Overseas Highway was one to remember. The place is another good example of gifts of nature in all its beauty. We drove all the way to Key West, from Miami. The colors of the water shot into view on getting... More
How fun to travel through history. Not only was it fun to travel between the two bodies of water, it was fun to still see the old bridges. I was glad that it wasn't too scary, though I imagine it is not something that should be done in fog.
