It has diminished greatly in the fifty years I've been diving there but so have most of the live reefs. It's in better shape than the over visited Pennekamp. Still lots of beauty and quite lively with fish.

Excellent shallow-water site about 4 miles offshore. Lots of fish schools to swim with, plenty of coral, fans, and sponges. Visibility is usually very good; try to go on a calm day. This pre-Civil war lighthouse reef is amazing to visit. Watch out for jellyfish; make sure to snorkel face down instead of trying to "stand up" so you can... More

Wow this is one of the best locations to snorkel or dive, untouched and great wild life. Saw sting rays nurse sharks

We live here and love the reef, unfortunately it has become a haven for those that should not operate boats. Be careful of those that drive their boats through the protected area! We have tried to visit the reef twice in the past month to no avail. First time several boats disregarded the protected zone and drove their boats right... More

Tons of fun! Lots of fish, sharks, turtles, coral, etc. Love this reef. Easy snorkeling, don't have to swim hard or far to see tons

Such a great snorkeling site! Our kids always love to snorkel at Sombrero Reef. We've seen enormous barracuda, grouper, and a beautiful sea turtle. Also makes for a beautiful view of the sunset with the old lighthouse.

I noticed alot of people trying to snorkel at Sombrero Beach thinking it was the reef. DUH! The reef is located at the lighthouse 3 miles out in the ocean. The day we visited we arrived early and the seas were 2-4 feet, pretty rough. Fortunately there were two charter snorkel boats just leaving. What really concerned me was the... More

This is a public beach so no charge. Sombrero Reef is a good place to snorkel . The water is nice and clear. Their is plenty of fish to see. The area was somewhat busy on our visit. The adults and the teens all had fun. Nice beach area with picnic pavilions. The water was more wavy here.

We went there with Abyss Dive center at the request of a fellow diver. It was pretty busy but we saw quite a bit. We actually saw more at another spot just a few hundred yards north of there.
