TropicBird offers the only naturalist-led ecotours of the 10,000 Islands under sail. We specialize in full day luxury private sailing charters deep into the 10,000 Islands. Our philosophy is to go softy. We hoist the sails as soon as we can. We want you to relax, unwind and enjoy the water sliding by and get a taste of cruising life. You can help crew the boat as much or as little as you like. Guests will see, hear and experience nature as intended in complete comfort with only the gurgle of water and gentle breezes across the very stable deck of our 34’ catamaran, TropicBird, as she slips through the pristine 10,000 Islands, where the western Everglades meet the Gulf of Mexico. Due to TropicBird’s exceptional shoal draft (just 18”) she can really reach the back waters. It’s a full day experience with an excellent lunch, wine, beer and all refreshments included.

Three couples just out for a nice day of learning and relaxation. Captain Patrick Higgins is a master at both. He makes the boating easy, the learning fun and, as a bonus, serves a wonderful lunch. The boat is comfortable, very stable and, when the sails are up, quiet as a church mouse. Patrick’s discussions are extremely interesting – he... More

We are so lucky to be blessed with such wonderful guests. Unfortunately our departure coincided with peak high tide so there wasn’t much wading bird activity, but we did see a dolphin pod with a new born on the way back from the beach and some interesting dolphin feeding behavior in the pass, as well as some roseate spoonbills. Somehow... More

Captain Patrick Higgins only takes 6 passengers at a time on an all day excursion through the 10,000 Island off Goodland, Florida. Aboard the Tropic Bird Patrick explains the eco system of the area. We started the day with coffee juice and baked good to start our trip. Sails all orning and dropped anchor for a few delicious appetizers and... More

We just had our first experience sailing with Patrick Higgins on his Tropic Bird Sailing vessel. It was even more than we had planned for when we booked this trip. It is a terrific way to experience what nature has to offer in South Florida and would be an long remembered trip for you and your children or grandchildren. Even... More

My family had a wonderful time sailing with Patrick. If you like to be on the water and learn about your surroundings as you go then you need to book a day with Patrick. We learned so much about the S. Florida ecosystem. Patrick's sailing, marine, and ecological knowledge coupled with his love of teaching makes for an incredible experience.... More

We spent a month on Marco Island, and our day with Patrick and Martha on the Tropic Bird was one of the best! Patrick is a naturalist full of information that he shares in a wonderfully entertaining way. He was great with our two grandchildren, ages 6 and 12, having them help with the boat in various ways. The catamaran... More

We had a marvelous day with Patrick and Martha Higgins sailing on Tropic Bird. The two of them were lots of fun. We were a mixed group of a family- grandparents down to kindergartener. On Tropic Bird there was something for everyone. The large, spotless, well appointed catamaran was fantastic. Plenty of shade and shelter if needed, and restroom on... More

Spent a lovely day on the water with Patrick on his catamaran. While I would not characterize this as a bird tour, we did see many nesting osprey, Royal terns, two kinds of plover, lots of sea gulls, and some wading birds. Also lots of dolphin. Aparently manatees are sometimes spotted, but not on our trip. The boat is fully... More

I was looking to give my dad and stepmom something unique for Christmas, so I researched activities in and near Naples and came across this one. After reading the reviews and checking out Patrick's website, I felt like this fit the bill. We tacked on my aunt and uncle and a friend of my dad's, and the 6 of us... More

I've lived in Naples for nearly 15 years and this day sail with Patrick ranks at the top of my list of things one can do to really enjoy & understand our surroundings. Patrick is so skillful at the helm, so knowledgable of the environment & such a wonderful host that our day was a "perfect 10" from the moment... More
