There is an excellent exhibit of Escher’s work in the Deland Museum of Art through March 2018. Worth a visit! They also have a super Museum Store.

Thank you so much for the review. Yes, Escher is an excellent show and is on exhibit until March 25. We love our Museum Store, so much cool stuff - a perfect place to find that special gift! Hope you will visit the Museum again.

There are two separate buildings for the Museum of Art. We went to the one situated at 100 Woodland where there is a temporary exhibit (I believe it ends near the end of March, 2018) of M.C. Escher's work. The museum closes at 4 pm , except for Thursdays, when it remains open until 9 pm. Tickets are $10 for general admission and are good for 3 days.We were the only ones there at night and began with 2 short videos of Escher's life and works. The receptionist was helpful and friendly, the exhibit was well spaced, with good lighting and featured lithographs, woodcut prints and a few objects. There is also a dark room with colored prints that is surreal, much like the man himself. The museum is modern and clean. The exhibit is on the second floor and is accessible by an elevator. The first floor houses a gift shop with a few interesting and relatively inexpensive items.Parking can be found nearby.

What an interesting museum, very up-to-date with a current painting exhibition by John Mellencamp. They also have a wonderful shop with lovely and unusual gifts for the holidays!

It's a cute museum with about 2 rooms of art. We stayed for about 40 minutes. I'm not sure that we'd return, though. Once was enough.

Sunday afternoon March 9, my wife and I, decided to visit this museum while in Deland.
Little did we know.
We started with the downtown museum satellite. One artist was on exhibition: Jill Cannady.
We were surprised to see paintings of animals (mostly dogs) showing powerful teeth and eyes full of hate, and ... basically the same with humans.
All this gave a strange, uneasy feeling and after 5 minutes we decided to leave and go to the main museum.
Over there, we found only more by the same artist.
Dogs with powerful jaws, sharp teeth, eyes showing the hatred; in other words animals ready for the kill. Underlying violence was everywhere. Needless to say we did not stay long.
This is so strange because obviously this artist is full of talent. She tends to favor surrealism, but even Salvador Dali could show love in his art. Cannady does not. She focuses on power ready for violence and kill.
Not advised at all to see this exhibition with kids.
During our short stay we just wondered if she is having mental problems, or whether she may be or was victim of some kind of abuse or domestic violence.
Anyway, a museum should offer more balanced exhibitions with a choice of different artists when showing such an extreme collection.

As we all know, art is subjective, so it is always a risk to have exhibitions that may offend some individuals. As part of every exhibition the Museum provides visitors with both written documentation about the artist and schedules many gallery talks with the artist and with trained docents to discover more about the artist’s techniques and the motivation behind their work. This extremely talented artist with more than 40 years working exceptionally in every medium has an extreme affection for the canine breed and has owned many dogs over the years. In addition to the title of the work of art that lived on the Museum exterior for four months: “After Andrew”, text panels, title cards and talks, revealed that the artist lived in Miami and weathered Hurricane Andrew with her beloved pets in 1992. She did not paint for 8 months following this horrible event. The fear she depicts in many of her furry subjects are an emotion she identifies as personal, real and symbolic. As many exceptional artists try to have their work evoke an emotion, Jill Cannady’s unmatched talent in every form of medium achieved just that, which was evident in the record numbers in attendance and membership growth during her exhibition. During this exhibition, hundreds of children from elementary and middle school ages to the college level visited the museum as part of in depth field studies, conducting art reviews and assessments that resulted in positive feedback from teachers, parents and students. During the past year alone, Museum members and visitors have been enlightened by the works of art by more than 100 different artists demonstrating the continued contributions in cultural arts and educational programming to the local community and schools, and to the visitors of DeLand. We hope you will visit us again to see other talented and experienced artists display their work and to attend a gallery talk. On July 11 Collector Samuel Blatt will be conducting a gallery talk on the exhibition Collector’s Choice: Blatt Collection.

If you are spending the day strolling Main Street then be sure to add the museum to your itinerary. They have a nice little gift shop, too.

This is a very nice museum with the collections spread between two separate facilities. The collections at the main museum building at 600 N Woodward Blvd were not to my liking (personal preference, others may love it). The Daniel Greene exhibit at the 100 N Woodward building is incredible and made the entire visit worth while.

A very disappointing experience. I rarely rate one star but felt we didn't get anywhere near our money's worth here. It was recommended by a friend so we decided to visit. The regular entrance fee is $5 but for special exhibits it's $10 per person. We didn't realize there was a "special exhibit" on the 2nd floor so we paid $20 only to see a third-rate display. Honestly, we spent less than 20 minutes here (and that included a bathroom break) and left thinking about the old Aesop saying, "A fool and his money are soon parted". I would NEVER return here and certainly would not recommend it to anyone. I'd recommend you save your money for a decent art museum

I am sorry you did not realize that the Museum had a second floor and also a second location. For special exhibitions, the admission is $10 for adults and always free for children under the age of 12 and all Stetson and Volusia County Public School students.
There were more than 100 works of art on exhibit at 600 N. Woodland when you visited and another 46 large format pieces by another artist at the downtown galleries located at 100 N. Woodland Blvd. The single admission prices gets you into both gallery locations and all exhibits.
The rest of the year for regular admission the price is $5 for adults.
Since your review, have asked the gallery admissions personnel to inform and remind guests that we have two floors or art and two locations.
We hope you enjoyed the rest of your visit to and around DeLand, Florida.
