Members of Manatee Eco Tourism Association, Better Business Bureau, and Citrus County Tourism Division. Owned by Bill (Bird) and Diana Oestreich

since 1993. Bill "Bird" and Diane Oestreich moved to Crystal River in 1989 and began teaching scuba diving and offering manatee snorkel tours. At that time there were only 3 hotels, one independent shop, and about 100 manatees that came to Citrus County in the winter months. Since then, Manatees have increased to over 1000 manatees in Citrus County alone in the winter, and there is an average population of about 35 manatees that remain in Kings Bay in the summer months. The Manatee Awareness Program was set up by Bird and Diana Oestreich in 1990 with the dive agency NAUI, then PADI, and now SDI offers the same program. They offer quality and personalized manatee tours with experienced and insured boat captains, all of which are at Divemaster level or higher. Manatee Tours average about 3 hours, but they do not have a set time in which they "pull" the customers out of the water in order to run another tour. All tours include drinks and snacks. Private tours include a full meal. Bird's Underwater Dive Center is located on the Kings Bay of Crystal River. You do not have to drive to a separate location to be on the water. Bird's Underwater is located on the dock behind the Dockside Trading Company. We are next to Charlies Fish House restaurant, and walking distance from Crackers restaurant. The Dockside Deli is located in the same parking lot. Main Street or Citrus Avenue is 2 blocks to the south, the Crystal River Mall is 1/4 mile north.

Bird's was great. When I called to first inquire about the experience, they were very helpful and I'm glad I took their advice. I was asking about late morning or afternoon tours, but they advised that the best time to interact with manatees is very early and that we should do the 6:00 AM tour. They were absolutely right! I... More

Mike was the captain and he gets five stars!!! My daughter flew from San Francisco and this was a wonderful experience for us. Saw a mama and baby. The swim excursion up the spring was like swimming in a fairy tale. One thing off my bucket list and a grand adventure it was. Excellent service and great business. Water is... More

First endeavor to commune with manatees and we had no idea how to go about it. Didn't make reservations (highly recommended!) but we lucked out with Bird's Underwater Dive Center having room on their 11 a.m. tour when we showed up at their dock. We have no gear and needed to be schooled in how to enjoy the experience with... More

We booked our Snorkel with the Manatees Tour for mid-November, which would normally be a few weeks into the "Winter" season (i.e. lots of manatees in the river). However, it turned out to be an unseasonably warm Fall. As we pushed off, Captain Steve let us know that because of the warm weather, instead of 100s of manatees, there were... More

My friend knows I've LOVED manatees for MANY years. This snorkel adventure included my friend, her husband, & my husband. Captain Steve and Captain Paul take GREAT measures to ensure the well-being of manatees (NO fins! I'm VERY grateful for their integrity), & humans alike. I was SO EXCITED to swim with them, but am NOT a seasoned snorkeler. I... More

We were told about Birds by a local fellow who was spot on with his recommendation. Not only did we see several Manatees but the captain and all the staff were very knowledgeable about the bay, the springs and conservation of the manatee. The best viewing is when the temp is below 60 for several days. Our captain Mike knew... More

We had two days booked with Bird's Underwater and extended to three. This alone should tell you how happy we were with the service. The booking was simple and we also used the Bird's accommodation - Hall River house. The boats were clean and spacious and our manatee guide very knowledgable on the area and not rushing us. We opted... More

Despite second guessing our decision to do the sunrise snorkeling tour on an overcast morning, we were rewarded by having the waters all to ourselves to enjoy the company of the loveable sea cows. Captain Cody and Paul (ok terrible with names) knew just where to go and managed to find some of the "residents" despite the overcast weather and... More

I'm a dive operator that was in town for the DEMA show in Orlando. Our "fun" day was down to Bird's on the recommendation of other dive operators. Easy check in, laid back crew, short ride to manatees, and very responsive to the desires of the participants. Photos by the crew better than almost all that we took, so save... More

Can't say enough good things. Captain Steve made sure we found some manatees. My friend was very nervous and Paul took time with her to get her comfortable in the water. Both men were great. I liked that one person was on the boat and one in the water to help swimmers. Would highly recommend them.

Thank Julie T
