The DuPont Environmental Education Center is located at the 212-acre Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge in Wilmington, where the city, river and marsh meet. The center opened in 2009 and has quickly become a favorite family attraction, thanks to interactive exhibits, free admission and numerous free programs, such as daily nature walks. It is owned by the Riverfront Development Corp. of Delaware and operated by Delaware Nature Society.

The duPont Environmental Center is located at the end of the revitalized Christina River Waterfront area. An elevated walkway leads into an education building with a fine observation point overlooking the Christina River and a newly built swamp pond where many types of birds congregate along with water-loving small animals. A water level boardwalk allows visitors to get up close... More

This place has lots of history and it is well worth going and see what we can do for the environment. I would recommend the visit if you are visiting Wilmington.

This is a hidden treasure in Wilmington. An elevated boardwalk leads around a small pond. Relatively peaceful ... although there is a constant background highway noise. Plenty of birds to see and adjacent to the Christina River. It hooks up to the Riverwalk area so you can walk down to a restaurant if you'd like.

I don't know that I'd have occasion to come here if I weren't needing to kill a few hours due a business trip, but it was a great oasis just down the road from the city centre. A genuinely pleasant discovery.

Bring bug spray - the facility is built in/on a swamp...nice walk-ways leading to the "tower", but the view of the mud fields gets old quick. Looks like they might hold "events" on the upper floor, so maybe with a good crowd and some nosh, I'd have a better opinion of it...

If you are on the Riverwalk you need to see this. Great landscape and flora. Some interesting birding as well.

What a wonderful place to visit, especially with young children. Great walking paths, especially the boardwalk that takes you through the marsh. A real chance to see some wildlife. We saw turtles, frogs and different species of birds. My grandsons really liked looking in the water looking for different things. There is also a path that follows along the river.... More

My husband and I took a stroll after dining on the Wilmington Riverfront and discovered this wonderful place. Gorgeous landscaping and views everywhere. Wonderful, peaceful area. The center has activities for adults and children. We really enjoyed walking on the boardwalk that goes over the marsh. Would love to participate in one of the canoe trips into the marsh. The... I took a walk here with a friend recently. We was shocked and impressed at how scenic the area is! The educational installations inside the building were not super interesting to us. However, the trail through the building and its surrounding area was very inspiring. I would recommend checking it out if you have 20-30 minutes to spend and enjoy... More

We visited the Center for an organized Daisy Scout event and the volunteers from the Delaware Nature Society could not have been kinder or better informed regarding the various early spring fish, fowl and insects that were out and about in the Center. If anyone in downtown Wilmington, DE ever needs a dose of nature, it's a short 10-minute drive... More
