If you want someone to go where there's plenty of space, a bit of beach, and plenty of fresh air, then Harkness is a great park. There's a small mansion to visit, but most of the attraction of the park is the view over the sea towards Long Island Sound and the fresh air. There's plenty of large tables for... More

The mansion along the coast and manicured grounds makes you feel like you are in Newport, RI. I didn't even know about this state park until recently and visited during free CT state parks weekend; a little crowded for that reason so maybe I'll try visiting again and tour the mansion and fly a kite. The beach was small and... More

How can this be a State Park when it is such a lovely spot to enjoy? The Harkness "house" and gardens are being lovingly restored by a group of dedicated volunteers. The Beatrix Farrard gardens were in full bloom with an incredible variety of plants. Our tour guide was informative and fun. wet my toes in the Atlantic Ocean while... More

My husband and I took the afternoon to tour the lovely grounds. Unfortunately we were unable to go in the mansion because the last docent led tour had left. We were told in a not so cordial manner to try again. I suggest that the house be open for self guided tours to accomodate late arrivals... Thanks to Connecticut for... More

We visited Harkness for the first time and found the mansion and grounds to be very beautiful. These old mansions, like the ones in Newport RI, are works of art now open to the public probably never to be repeated. As this and others are open for public use, the state of Connecticut should invest more in their maintenance and... More

This is really a nice state park. I grew up in CT but it took me over 50 years to discovery this serene place and the mansion. This past Sunday was perfect, the weather was very nice, it wasn't over crowded but there were plenty of picnics going on. The beach was full and the Mansion tour just spectacular if... More

I've been torn over rating this place; part if me wants to keep it a secret because it is such an amazing place. I spent countless summers days as a kid wandering Harkness, hiding in the gardens, clambering over rocks, enjoying their Summer Music program, swimming, fishing, flying kits and having cookouts. Twenty years later I go back for the... More

My husband and I spent about 4 hours at Harkness on a gorgeous Saturday combing the beach, playing in the tide pools, hiking around the shore line and along the preserve walk. We enjoyed watching the birds, the kites, the waves, and others totally enjoying themselves. We strolled through the gardens, ate salads and inhaled the smells of summer: salt... More
