Beautiful grounds with a small beach. The mansion was not opened, only open on Sundays, but sitting on the front steps gazing across the wide lawn looking down to the Sound, you could easily imagine attending a Great Gatsby party.

Believe me when I say I have experience with and have visited many Connecticut state parks, and out of all of them, Harkness comes out on top. There is so much well-maintained, open lawn overlooking the Ocean, with a beach area that is beautiful for dipping your toes in the water (swimming isn't allowed), catching crabs, fishing, or just reading... Hope not too many people find this place! So family oriented, lots of picnic tables with shade trees, walking/biking paths, small beach - dip your toes, no swimming though.

Waterfront state park with magnificent views of Long Island Sound. Can tour the Harkness Mansion which was the home of the Harkness family -- father was Rockefeller's partner at Standard Oil. Next door is Harkness Camp for disabled - one of many philanthropic entities Harkness family supported (original camp was on their mansion grounds). Gardens are beautiful and in full... More

My boyfriend and I had a picnic at Harkness Memorial Day weekend. While there were people there celebrating with their families, it didn't feel overly crowded. The grounds are beautiful, and we even saw a wedding ceremony happening! So romantic.

This state park is located on the shore of Waterford, CT and is easy to get to. It's a beautiful location with a wide open field that leads to the water. the views from the shore are really party. There is room to lay down & take in the sun and have a bite, throw a ball or frisbee etc.... More

I absolutely adore this place! Driving into the park is definitely an "AWW" moment! Seeing the humongous home, and the well kept landscape of the property, brings you back to a place many years ago. As you walk up to the main house there is a beautiful oblong pathway to the entrance of the home. As my wife and I... More

Harkness State Park has one of the most significant historic gardens in CT. Old Mansion is used for weddings. Shoreline views are awsome. small beach and large picnic area. Still has many of the stately beech trees from its' days as a rich banker's summer estate. Labor day weekend the house and outbuildings are open for public touring. Natural wildlife,... More

It's saddening to think that this place was almost bull-dozed. Harkness Park is a beautifully landscaped summer estate gifted to the people of Connecticut by the outrageously wealthy Harkness family, civic-minded One Percenters of the early twentieth century. The grounds consist of several gardens, maintained with historical accuracy to preserve the intentions of the original designer, Beatrix Farrand, a female... More

Our cold and windy Spring prevented most of the daffodils from blooming the day I visited. A lovely state park with a mansion, Eolia, wonderful walking areas allowing for views of Long Island Sound amongst various gardens as well as a paved area for roller blading. A variety of events often held on the grounds. Come with cash as the... More
