Description: Discover the real Middle-earth on the most picturesque private farmland...
Discover the real Middle-earth on the most picturesque private farmland near Matamata in the North Island of New Zealand, where you can visit the Hobbiton Movie Set from The Lord of the Rings film trilogy in a fascinating two-hour guided tour. The set has been completely rebuilt and will remain as it was seen in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. There are spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from the rolling green hills of the movie set, which is still a working sheep and beef farm.As the Hobbiton Movie Set is located on a real New Zealand farm, we also offer you the opportunity to cuddle and bottle feed the pet lambs. You can relax and soak up the unique atmosphere with a great cup of coffee or a light meal in The Shires Rest Cafe, which is also available for functions, conferences or other occasions. Visit The Shire Store (below the cafe) for some special souvenirs to remind you of your visit.

It's a bit pricey- but worth it! Make sure you try and get the first tour of the day- because after that it gets way too crowded. Our guide was super friendly and knowledgable! And patient- because we had some pretty bad stragglers who would not listen to her. But it was amazing and even got to drink beer/cider at... More

This was without doubt the most touristy part of our three week visit to NZ. While interesting and clearly very well managed there are so many people on the tour that at times the guide was almost pulling her hair out having to 'herd cats'! Fellow tour-goers failed to listen to what is a guided tour and it spoilt the... More

To walk the same paths as those famous hobbits in the LOTR/Hobbit movies was a lifelong memory. The quality of the setting, the attention to detail, and the effort to maintain the grounds just like the movie is jaw-dropping. Being busy with tourists added an energy that made you feel like it was not a movie set but a real... More

Overseas visitors wanted to visit the Hobbiton set & my wife & I being non LOTR fans were a bit sceptical about spending NZ$75 each for the tour. We are very glad we did! From the very well sign posted & laid out car park, the schedule for buses going to the set, the knowledgable & friendly guide to the... More

This is probably the biggest tourist trap in NZ. Tons of stuff they're hawking in the shop, and everything is geared toward getting as many tourists (and their dollars) in and out efficiently. If you accept that up front, you'll love it. Tour is very well organized. The sheer number of people moving through the relatively small set is managed... More

Even though I am not one to take tons of pictures, the shire, hobbit holes, Dragon Inn compel one to keep taking pictures because each view is so photogenic. Our guide, I believe his name was Ben, was engaging and informative We did do this in combination of a tour to Rotorua thermal springs. I would recommend doing this type... More

Hobbiton was beautiful! It’s full of life (flowers, vegetable gardens, ponds, frogs, butterflies & the greenest grass you’ll ever see) and you feel like you’re right there in the movie. Make sure you stop for a drink at the Green Dragon! The beer and service were really good, and the attention to detail literally EVERYWHERE you look is unbelievable. It’s... More

As a LOTR fan I could not get enough of Hobbiton! The location was picturesque plus it was great to see the Hobbit holes up close and best part was to finish off the tour with a beer at the Green Dragon!

I am by no means a massive fan of LOTR or The Hobbit. I have seen all the movies but that's it. I really enjoyed this tour. The tour guide was great and offered really interesting insights into the lengths Jackson went to to make sure it looked just as the books say. I think i was lucky in that... More

We had Jack drive us round the site in a golf cart as my mother in law is 81 and cannot walk very far. He was a wonderful guide very informative and considerate to our requests to stop for photos etc. the site is great and very picturesque with over 40 hobbit holes all different unique in their own way....
