Owner description: Discover the real Middle-earth on the most picturesque private farmland near Matamata in the North Island of New Zealand, where you can visit the Hobbiton Movie Set from The Lord of the Rings film trilogy in a fascinating two-hour guided tour. The set has been completely rebuilt and will remain as it was seen in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. There are spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from the rolling green hills of the movie set, which is still a working sheep and beef farm.As the Hobbiton Movie Set is located on a real New Zealand farm, we also offer you the opportunity to cuddle and bottle feed the pet lambs. You can relax and soak up the unique atmosphere with a great cup of coffee or a light meal in The Shires Rest Cafe, which is also available for functions, conferences or other occasions. Visit The Shire Store (below the cafe) for some special souvenirs to remind you of your visit.

Ok - This place is expensive and is run a bit like a tourist trap. But what a heck....if you have seen LOTR or Hobbit then you have seen Shire, you have admired those rolling planes, wonder how will it be to enter through one of the colorful and almost round doors. This is a place where you can do... More

The site itself is fantastic, as was the actual tour guide (and loved the free beer at the Green Dragon). I was tempted to say average, purely on the getting there experience, but, again, the site itself is fantastic. We had issues with the driver of the bus seeming to wait unnecessarily for passengers that were already there. Then, when... More

An absolute must do when in New Zealand if you're a Middle Earth fan. It's amazing to see the set, but I think the company would definitely benefit from perhaps introducing a longer tour for the die-hard fans who want more time to enjoy the atmosphere of the set. Our guide was nice and friendly, and even grabbed a leaf... More

I'm a big Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fan and I loved this tour. Learnt so many other facts I didn't know before and I loved seeing all the little hobbit holes, not to mention the Ginger Beer at the end was one of the best Ginger Beer's I've ever had! Definitely do it if you're in New Zealand,... More

OMG AMAZING! If you go to NZ, go to Hobbiton. LOTR fan or not, it is a great day out. I did the one from Auckland and it was better than I expected. It took us through the Waitamo glow worm caves to start, and then to Hobbiton. The guide was entertaining and had so many informative stories about all... More

We followed the guide book instructions to Matamata and then got totally lost as there is no signage from the town. Thanks to various garage attendants we finally arrived to miss our booking time and the next was 2 hours later. We decided to give it a miss. At $75 a head we had done our dash! According to the... We caught the bus to/from the Matamata information centre to the Hobbiton movie set. Parking was easier in Matamata. The tour is about 2 hours, but comes to 3 hours with the bus ride and time in the gift shop at the end. The tour is great. The tour guides do hurry you a bit because of the number of... More

Hobbiton was the high spot of my recent visit to North Island. The movie set has been rebuilt to be permanent and as you walk round you can easily believe that a Hobbit might just appear from one of the Hobbit Holes. There are over eighty holes, all with beautifully tended gardens and most with smoke coming from the chimneys.... More

Get immerse into hobbiton, be ready to queue for bus, walk in the sun for 2 hour. Umbrellas available on site. Photo opportunities are available after the rest of the 41 tourist in your group. Prepare to fight with tourist for photo chance. Do watch the kids as there is a PRC kid who climbs onto the poor flowers and... More
