The Hobbiton Movie Set tour is an essential stop on the itinerary for all visitors travelling through New Zealand, offering an interesting and entertaining experience incorporating the famous film set as seen in The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

Fall in love with the Alexander family sheep and beef farm, just as acclaimed director Sir Peter Jackson did, as you journey through the village, with the mighty Kaimai Ranges towering in the distance. Your guide will then escort you around the set, showing you the intricate detailing, pointing out the most famous locations and explaining how the movie magic was made. You will be taken around the 12 acre set; past Hobbit holes, the Mill and into the famous Green Dragon™ Inn, where you can indulge in our exclusive, specially brewed beverages to conclude your own Middle-earth™ adventure.

The movie set is located in a absolutely beautiful surrounding, and the original movie set is there available to visit. It is great for Hobbits and Lord of the Ring fans, but absolutely nonsense if you do not belong to these categories.

Had a great tour here. OK, it can get crowded, but the staff does well at managing the crowds of people that want to see the movie set. It makes watching the movies again interesting because you have been there to see it in person. It is a movie set, so all the hobbit holes are just facades. However, the... More

My wife and I recently visited the set of Hobbitton and found it be everything we thought it would be. The tour was about just under two hours. If you have problems walking this would not be a tour for you. Many of the pathways are narrow and no make for wheelchair access. The tour was amazing and you got... More

We really enjoyed our tour. Both the bus driver and tour guide were knowledgable and helpful. Lots of opportunities for taking photos. Great tasting cider and beer at the end!

What a fun way to spend 3 hours. Granted it is a money maker for whoever owned the site but the tour was informative, keep on schedule and great for photos. For followers of the "Lord of the rings" series it was a delight to be able to see the movie and imagined how things really were. A great way... More

A well organised visit in groups that allowed space for photos and discussion. The guide was very informative and having a drink in the Green Dragon was fun and the food is excellent. We had very sunny weather that helped the valley look fresh but it was a great experience for those who love the stories and the more sceptical

I am a big fan of the books, the movies, everything about Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit so my review is from that perspective. The experience was amazing, the grounds and the plant life and buildings are very well kept and it helps to maintain the atmosphere of walking into The Shire. The tour guides are very knowledgeable... More

Well designed and organized. The sun was shining and the water sparkling. Great guide, informative; told us some of the filming 'tricks', and it didn't spoil the magic. We are LOTR fans [not fanatics]; we could see ourselves sitting on our Hobbit front steps after supper, with a glass of beer and a pipe, surveying The Shirs

Our cruise around New Zealand stopped in Tauranga and we chose a shore excursion to the Hobbiton Movie Set, an hour bus ride from the port. The famous Shire is on the Alexander’s 1250 acre sheep and beef farm just outside Matamata. Our first stop allowed us a chance to use the restroom and check out the gift shop while... More
