Was in New Britain for the Eastern League All Star Game last year and decided to do the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat. Am I glad I did! I defitely recomend doing both the steam train and riverboat for the full experience. First you ride on an authentic steam train, then you ride on a riverboat before going back on... More

Having lived in Connecticut for over forty-five years we finally decided to try the Dinner Train. The experience was first class. Old dining cars with fresh flowers, real plates and utensils, table cloths and napkins served as a preview of comming attractions. Our pre-ordered meal was salmon. We started out with a glass of champaign ($7.50) followed by the meal... More

The stream train and riverboat were relaxing. When we boarded the train the seats were quite dusty. There was nothing much to see on the steam train – mainly trees. After about a 15-minute ride we were brought to the riverboat. That leg of the trip was quite informative. The drinks were quite overpriced but overall it was very relaxing.

Took the combo train and steamboat trip. Train ride was fun and very nostalgic. Steamship was fun and relaxing. There's a small gift shop and small cafe for a quick bite. Total tour length train and steamship is close to 3 hours. For 28 dollars you can't go wrong. Only train seats are a bit cramped.

My wife and I along with friends decided to make the trip from Highland, NY to Essex Ct. to take the Steam Train and Riverboat excursion. We opted to ride in the First Class car on the Steam Train and found the single padded seats to be comfortable. They also had drink service and the seats allowed you to swivel... More

The combination of train and boat ride were well worth the time and money. The train cars are nicely restored and comfortable to ride in. The boat ride up and back on the Connecticut River is a calm and enjoyable experience. One of the sights that is pointed out by the announcer, the Gillette Castle, was where we had just... More

The "fun" element in this is probably more for children than adults, but it is an enjoyable way to spend a few hours. We were on the Open Car on the train, so the commentary was barely audible over the sound of the train. And like everyone else wrote - sit on the RIGHT SIDE. We were on the left,... More

My husband and I recently made our first trip to Essex and the steam train/riverboat topped our list of things to do. We rode "first class" and enjoyed some cocktails from our plush swivel chairs while taking in the sights. This car is the only one where alcohol is allowed, and drinks cost about $6 and up, As other reviewers... More

My wife and I were looking forward to this attraction; however, we were sorely disappointed. The parking area at this location is nasty. It's in a grass field off a dirt/sand causeway. Then you must walk along a dirt path for quite some distance to get to the train, which we did. We paid extra for the "so-called" 1st class... More

Great experience with kids under 7. My kids are experienced steam train riders (thomas, polar express, etc) and they haven't grown tired of the steam train experience but we wanted to added a little something and this train/river excursion was just the ticket. First things first, as the other review has said, SIT ON THE RIGHT! That means, when you... More
