Most people tend not to do the activates that are in their own back yard. I used to live in Essex and now live a few towns over. I have been on it few times. I grew up around trains and my dad was in a train club years ago. If you love trains, you will love the Essex Stream... More

This was a great family experience. Friendly atmosphere and a great trip. Easy off highway access. Not too crowded for time visited. Would DEFINATELY return with my family and friends.

We went down to Essex specifically to spend the day on the train on 5/9 (National Train Day and opening weekend). We took the Steam Train and Riverboat Tour at 2PM and then the Dinner Train in the evening. The customer service when I called to ask questions was great, the man even suggested places to stay overnight. We paid... More

Visited this area late September/early October and it was a perfect way to see the sights from the land and sea. I mention the latter since the train ride is accompanied with a boat ride where the captain pointed out local sights like the medieval looking Gillette's Castle, the East Haddam Swing bridge (that opened when we were there), and... This is a great trip for anyone; singles, families, etc. The inside of the steam train really takes you back in time. It's a beautiful and interesting ride to see the Gillette Castle. The river boat is nice too. In the fall, you get the added display of leaves along the river.

Great experience for adults and small children . Well organized and many carnival rides included in the price for little tykes. Small Thomas Lego train as a parting gift was a nice touch. Food available is from concessions. Nice family outing and the train ride was just long enough for small children. This place can get crowded. We had a... More

We visited Essex, CT, in October 2014 to view fall foliage. We decided to take the train and boat ride that we read about--so glad we did. You get to see fall foliage that you wouldn't normally see from the road. The day started out rainy, so it was nice to be inside the train to let someone else do... More

We drove 2.5 hours from New York in Mid April 2015. Basically nothing was happening and the steam train was not running since it was not the season. Went to the famous and ancient restaurant and had fish and chips. The restaurant was beautiful, but It was one of the worst food you can ever have. If you are a... More

I was fortunate to receive a gift from my children to participate in the Your Hand on the the Throttle experience. This was great! I received home study materials concerning railroad safety, whistle and hand signals, the structure and function of steam locomotives, and a history of Locomotive 3025. Upon arriving at the Essex Steam Train, we had a one... More

We took the Essex train for the foliage trip in October 2014. What a beautiful vintage train that has a lot of character. I enjoyed just kicking back, people watching and talking to my husband. They give you history about certain sights as you take a leisurely ride. Then we took the riverboat and had more fun. You can walk... More
