Loved, loved, loved this experience. The views, the staff on the train, all was wonderful. The fellow on the riverboat was inexperienced and reading from notes where he often lost his place put a small damper on the riverboat portion, but it was still very enjoyable.

We did this on independence day weekend with 2-3 year olds and it was a day well spent! We did the castle connection as well and it wasnt too difficult with the kids although the train conductor was surprised to see us with kids and bags going for the castle connection. It's a bit of a climb at the castle... More

When we arrived to purchase tickets we were told that we could buy 4 for the train, but the next 4 boat runs were all sold out-we could go on 12:30 Train but not til 6:30 for the boat. They are the best deal in the combo. Where were we supposed to wait? This really made us sad as we... More

The Essex Steam Train, located in Essex Connecticut, offers a variety of options. We chose the 2.5 hour steam train & riverboat ride, which made for a pleasant, entertaining ride. Also available, however, is a slightly longer lunch train, a Gillette Castle trip, a romantic dinner train, as well as special events and occasions (weddings, special birthdays, corporate functions, etc.)....check... Loved this. Pretty scenery on both the stream train and the riverboat ride. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable. We will definitely do this again with the whole family. Would love to come back in the fall.

We enjoyed the train ride. Staff were very helpful. We took the short walk down to the ferry and visited Gillette castle, before getting the return train. A few other engines and rolling stock to see at the Essex end, but not much. Worth a visit but to maximise your time get off for the ferry and do Gillette Castle,... More

A friend and I went on the Steam Train / Riverboat excursion package. We reserved ahead and there are several coupon possibilities. Employees are in period attire and friendly. The narrative is informative and fun.Train and boat work well together. A nice way to spend several hours.

We paid extra for the "first class" and it was so worth it, nice comfy seats that swivel and turn, the boat ride was very nice (didn't care for the plastic chairs) but it a very nice tour of the river with some nice commentary (if/when you can hear it). I would do this again even my 13yr old enjoyed... More
