My wife and I traveled to Essex for our wedding anniversary and a visit to the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat were included in our itinerary. The train ride was a BLAST! During my first four years in college I commuted to Cambridge on the railroad to South Station in Boston and then via the subway to Harvard Square -... More

Nice outing for something different than the beach. Great information over the speakers. Snacks available for purchase on both the train and the river boat.

I'm not a train enthusiast but my husband is but this trip was enjoyed by both of us. For my husband, because this was an authentic train and train ride with a cruise on the Connecticut River on a riverboat. For me, because of the scenery, nature and and the slowing down of a beautiful day.

We opted to take just the train ride and forgo the river boat ride. Good thing, as there were four busloads for tourists and the train became a little crowded on the ride. Can't imagine what the boat would have been like. (We had called ahead and told there was plenty of room). The grandkids, ages 4 and 5 got... More

As you step off the platform and take that first step on the train it is like you transported to the 1920s. Boarding the Meriden is part of the 1st class cars of the train. The tables were lined in white linen. With lit candles and pink freesia flowers in the vase gave the mood of a romantic evening. The... More

On the Fourth of July my husband and I took my mother on the dinner train. It was a real winner. The food, atmosphere and wait staff were outstanding. The hot towels , mints and roses were extras that brought our experience into the highly recommend category. We plan on doing it again, this time for lunch.

After walking through the village of Essex and then enjoying the steam train and riverboat ride, we boarded the Essex Clipper dining car and immediately went back in time to a more elegant era. We had an amazing 2 1/2 hours. The service was outstanding, the food was good and the ambience unbeatable. Everyone in our party was very pleased.... More

Met up with friends for a girls weekend. It was a Friday in July. We got the first class ticket. It's only for the train portion. There is no first class on the boat. The only reason one would get first class is for the swivel seats and waitress service. Other than that don't bother. Train ride was short narration... More

After wanting to take a ride on the train for many years, I finally got the chance to take a ride on the old steam train and the boat. It is a relaxing trip for an adult, but not one to be recommended for children. It is exciting for a child to ride on the train and hear the train's... More
