What a fantastic surprise. We visited Victor and a backers owner suggested we go to American Eagles Overlook. We followed the directions and entered an operating mine (by anngloGold Ashanti) where we signed in with the guard. We then drove up to approximately 10,600 ft. and had fantastic views. Could see mountain tops, working mine, mining trucks, historical mining buildings... More

Outside Victor to the north, signs will take you to the overlook. You pass through the mine's checkpoint, but it's not a problem. Drive onward, carefully, to the top and you'll see all the way to the Continental Divide in the distance, and down into the huge Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine operations. No admission. Worth the time.

If you are up in the Cripple creek area, this is a must. Not only are the old mining structures in the area unique, but to watch the open pit mining from above is awesome. A great view of the big trucks, lots of gold mining history. We take out of state guests up here all the time.

The view of the mine from the overlook is one of sheer awe. We enjoyed watching those huge dump trucks hauling their incredible loads. Take the time to explore the informational plaques and old buildings at the top. It is very informative. We had to stop on the way down to allow the dump trucks to pass with their loads.... More

What a fantastic view! Firstly you drive up an unmade up road (very bumpy, but worth it!) When you get to the top the view is amazing. You can see for miles and miles. There was nobody else up there when we visited which made it all the more special. We took our three chihuahuas and they loved it too.... More

Great road - it is active mining property - so you do have to give your name and the mine takes your license plate number before allowing you on the property. It's a quick, but interesting, drive and an old mine, blacksmith shack, workings, headboard are at the top.

I'm an occasional dumb butt. I actually thought this was an overlook for a nature preserve. In other words - I didn't research it on Trip advisor! This is an overlook of an actual working mine. This is on the company property & they have a guard come out of a gate house to see how many we had in... More

The warning from the security guard about Haul road got the adrenal going. Haul road is an intersection and you can see very clear in both directions. Trucks carrying to much weight to stop for you drive this road. We did not see any trucks that could potentially smash us when we crossed Haul road. You will see them up... More

The overlook has a really fantastic view of the open pit mine below, and you can watch all the mining operations. Plus you're at 10,500 feet in the Rockies and have amazing views of the mountains for miles around. In addition, at the overlook, there are the remains of a number of buildings and equipment from an earlier mine with... More

This is a couple of miles outside of Victor. As you drive down Main Street after coming from Cripple Creek, turn left onto 3rd Street, go one block and turn right onto Teller County Road 81. Follow the main paved road. There is some antique mining equipment along the highway in several places, and much of it is accessible. After... More
