Wonderful guide to the underworld

Well done tour by a very friendly and knowledgable guide who happened to be the owner. Teenagers had fun panning for gold also. Would definitely recommend to other Ouray visitors

Returning to Ouray for our family vacation, we revisited the mine tour. The kids were excited to get to pan for gold again and my wife and I really enjoyed listening to Richard explain the history of mining. My daughter ask him about information for a school project and he took the time to go into great detail and even... More

Our family took this mine tour, and were the only people there on a Sunday afternoon in July - the height of tourist season. I guess this should have been an indication to us that this was not the best attraction in town, but the ratings on TA were good, and it was mentioned in the Frommer's guide, so we... More

Sorry that your experience wasn't what you expected it to be. We do offer gold panning after or before every mine tour and it's included in the price. Richard is a wonderful guide and lets everyone know after his tour that gold panning is available if you choose to do so. There's real gold along with silver and other great... More

My husband and I were staying in Ouray and taking a number of the back roads past the old mines and wanted to learn more about them. The man that lead the tour was very knowledgeable and was able to answer many of our questions about the mines in the area. The tour consists of a 1500 foot walk into... More

When we visit a new area, we love to learn about the history. If you visit the San Juan mountains, don't miss out on this slice of local culture. We went too late for breakfast, which we heard is great. It was my first tour of a mine, and I found everything fascinating. Got some great pictures too. Highly recommend.

Note that this is a walking tour where you walk 1500 feet into the drift. Our guide Tony, who has real-world experience in underground mining, explained the history and layout of this particular mine and pointed out the interesting calcium formations on the walls formed by water running down the rocks. Once we reached a gate blocking off the main... More

This was our second mine tour. The staff was great, but the tour was a little weak in my opinion. If you have never been on a mine tour it would be a good first tour. The kids really liked panning for gold and silver after the tour.

My 7 year old enjoyed the tour and the gold panning. Wish the tram was still operating and would love to go all the way in to the old shaft.

loved the tour, however we were there for a family reunion and thought the kids (ages 7 and 4) would enjoy going into the mine. They were over it almost as soon as it began. You walk in about 1500 ft or so and then sit and listen to mining history. VERY interesting to myself and my husband, kids couldn't... More

Tony was enthusiastic not only about guiding the tour, but also about fixing and bringing back to life the old equipment used when the mine was still in operation. You get a good sense of what miner's work entailed from the days of the single jack miners up to more heavy duty operations.
