I'm not sure how anyone who has even a passing interest in trains could not find this museum excellent. I have been to nearly all major RR museums in the US (Sacramento, B&O, Strasburg, etc.) and this ranks up with the best. A few people groused about the poor maintenance of some of the displays. Hello! These are old, historic... More

We enjoyed the hobo exhibit and other exhibits inside, along with the exquisitely detailed model inside. The train cars outside were interesting, but I would have liked to have seen the insides of more of them, and it didn't seem like the signs were lined up with the actual train cars, so you had to do a lot of back... As a train enthusiast and with my own model trains, the Colorado Railroad Museum was a must see during our time there. The train yard was certainly big but I had the feeling that a lot of the engines and wagons weren't really maintained and only rusting along. The train ride is targeted towards kids and the circle is really... More

I also found this museum through Groupon and bought the Saturday tickets so that we could ride the train of the day. My 2 1/2 year old grandson loved this place. So much to see and do, inside the visitors center and out! They next time they are in town, this will be a repeat activity for years to come.... More

I found the museum purely by chance through Groupon. I bought and used the Groupon, but I would have paid full price. We were planning to be in Golden for an afternoon/evening as we were passing through Denver and wanted something fun to do with our kids. We were not disappointed. My son loved all of the trains, especially the... More

The visitors' center where you start is very interesting. Plan to take time to walk the entire place and you'll find many things to see. It's all gravel and rock so wear good walking shoes. It was in the high 90's when we were there so it was extremely hot. You'll be outside the entire time so be sure to... More

Great Museum to see. Multiple cars, engines and museum to see on static display. The museums does have two working engines and takes loops around the property. Fun to ride in an antique rail car from the 1800's. All restored and continued work on other cars. For the railroad enthusiast, there is a model train area with about 6 different... More

We took our almost 5 year old grandson to this and we wondered if he'd enjoy it. After being there for a few minutes, we didn't think he'd ever leave. There are many railroad veterans that work as volunteers or actually work on the trains themselves - rebuilding, retooling, painting, etc. Our grandson went into the very big wheelhouse where... The excellent rating is only if you like trains. Plan a visit to coincide with the museum's steam-up days when vintage steam locomotives haul passengers around the perimeter of the property; ride in the caboose. Lots of older locomotives (steam and diesel), working steam locomotives, a round house and turntable, specialty stock (snow plows). Many are available to climb on/in.... More
