This is an awesome trail. We thought being in Durango, the trail would be full of hills, wrong! The few hills you encounter are very mild, and you get to ride bikes along the beautiful Animas River. For the adventurous, you can see this trail when you go through Durango on a raft.

We visit in October to support my sister who runs the Durango double. It is a well maintained trail with wonderful scenery. It runs around the city of Durango so you can avoid the crowds on Main street.

Well maintained and paved walkway. Enjoyed watching rafters and kayakers brave the rapids. The birds serenaded our walk.

A beautiful river that is commercially underdeveloped due to the powers that be on main street and a good ole' boy government hegemony. The addition of just a couple well placed restaurants and bars--and maybe even a music venue--will greatly help to take the Animas River Trail, and Durango for that matter, to the next step in achieving great mountain... We started behind Albertson's (DoubleTree Hotel) and went up to 32nd Street on our own bikes. Beautiful day and not crowded on a Monday morning. The river is pretty high, so we only noticed two rafting groups go through when we biked (about 9:30am). The views are spectacular, there are a few bridges to go over and small inclines here... This is a pleasant trail for walking or biking right along the river. Away from traffic, and you can go in either direction from the downtown. Not crowded and you can enjoy the quiet of the riverside.

Every year we find time, while in Durango to bike the trail from top to bottom. It is a great little ride. The trail follows the river. There are very few little hills to climb. We typically find it not very crowded. The views along the river are great. There are a few cafes and restaurants along the route that... More

We rented bikes from Monty's/Durango Cyclery and had a beautiful 12 mile ride! Bring a picnic along and stop at the end or at one of the few spots with a shady spot along the way!

Do sections or ride the whole thing. Downtown bike rentals are available or just walk down to the river and stroll for miles in either direction enjoying the river activity. Easy, level trail that is beautiful anytime of year and is wheelchair accessible.

With high runoff this year, the rafts, tubes and kayaks will be viewable, so join the enthusiastic locals and enjoy the exercise. Above Santa Rita park, the Animas is one of the last free-flowing rivers left, and signs along the paved trail offer an excellent history of Durango and its pretty river. Dogs dive in and swim after sticks, while... More
