Recognized as one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century, Filoli welcomes the public to this remarkable 654-acre property. Designed between 1915 and 1917 and set against the dramatic backdrop of the northern Santa Cruz mountains in Woodside, California, Filoli is an excellent example of the Golden Age of American garden design and country house architecture. Opened to the public in 1976 as a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Filoli features a 36,000 sq. Ft. Home and a 16-acre English Renaissance Garden. In addition, Filoli's property includes a 6.8 Acre Gentlemen's Heritage Orchard and a trail system that transverses five different ecosystems for docent-guided nature hikes. Filoli is dedicated to the preservation, interpretation and stewardship of the cultural traditions and natural history of this country estate for public education and enjoyment.

This place is beautifully landscaped and must have been laid out by a magician. Surprises and breathtaking vistas in all directions. The gardens are some of the most beautiful I've seen, and I've dragged my poor husband to every garden I can find. The home is worth a visit also. It is interesting to see how to truly wealthy lived... More

I've lived in Northern California for nearly 15 years but had never visited Filoli. Took a tour with friends in April and loved it. The tour, grounds, and staff were wonderful. People of all ages including very young kids had plenty to enjoy. Can't wait to visit during all the seasons!

With every visit, I come to love Filoli more. Its gardens are always magnificent. Gorgeous flowers and interesting shrubs seem to defy this year's drought. Highly recommend taking a guided tour — although plants are very well marked, you'll learn history and inside information you'd otherwise miss. It doesn't matter what season you come, there's always something interesting to see... More

Visited this National Trust for Historic Preservation site this past February. Although the trees were bare, the brightly hued tulips and precisely drawn hedges and shrubs more than made up for it. The weather was pleasant and the home itself was well organized with large black and white photos on a pedestal in each respective room to show how it... More

This property was created in a forgotten time in America. No personal income taxes, wise yet risky industrialist and banking investments, and did I mention ownership of a huge Gold Mine (in Sierra "Mother lode" of Grass Valley, Ca)?? My first introduction to the Bourn Family's accomplishments was the Empire Mine in Grass Valley, and their Bourn Cottage summer home.... More

Love it so much! Both gardens and mansion are amazing. Beginning of April it is not a good time because tulips and daffodils season is almost ended, roses, peonies are not in blossom yet. But they have beautiful camellias and azaleas. It is not a place for baby strollers. In the garden they have stairs.

We live in the Bay Area and are fortunate to live a few miles from Filoli. And as members, we go there a few times a month and have never been disappointed. While spring is the best time to visit, you will still have a great time in the summer or fall. On your first visit, make sure to take... More
