Very interesting tour. When we went they told us that they would be closing soon because they are going to re-open the mine as a commercial mining operation. Too bad, I'm glad that we got in when we did!

We did this on a past trip, several years ago. It was fun to go down into the mine and see the gold in the rock walls of the tunnels. And experience the dark conditions in which the miners of the past worked. Very educational. I also really enjoyed the lessons in panning for gold. I would like to do...

When we visited the mine in July, they said that they were trying to get permits to actually start mining again and would no longer have tours when that happened. The Gold Mine tour was very informative and great fun. The ride in the jeep going into the mine was an adventure in itself! Not to be missed if you are in the area!

...a little boring for adults. The video topside was almost more interesting than the trip down the mine itself. A good experience for families.

Sadly for the public, the mine is closing its tourist phase and re-opening as a commercial gold mine in early August 2011. You can still walk along the old Stringbean Alley which passes behind the mine for a peak at the entrance and the ventilation system. Stringbean Alley intersects old CA-49 in Amador City and passes other abandoned mine sites.
