Spent a day here wandering around, enjoying the wildlife (there were several different types of birds) people watching and enjoying the weather. Nice place to stretch your legs and get lost if your not familiar with the park at all! Loved it.

We went to a concert in May here at the park. There were a lot of hills and my handicapped husband was having trouble getting around. Not one person volunteered to help him. The line was in a dirty area under a bridge. No one was watching the line and thousands of people were pushing and shoving each other and... More

Went to a two day music concert under the freeway in a dust bowl with every cigarette smoker in the state of California with 100 plus degree heat.

We're from southern California visiting friends. We headed to Discovery Park with our two children (3&7). Lots of homeless people on our short walk there, but we're not too uptight and they were indifferent or friendly so we trekked on. As we approached the parking booth on foot, husband and I noticed a man taking a hit off a crack... More

The beach at Discovery Park is now being regulated by park rangers. They are closing the parking lot when full and that is helping keep the crowds down. There are free loaner life jackets if you get there early. The water is calm near the shore but deep and faster where all the boats head up the American river. There... More

We went to this park two different times of the day and it was like night and day literally. When we went early in the morning on a monday it seemed to be deserted until we parked. 2p homeless people came at us from every direction asking for money but they all quickly left after we told them no. It... More

This large and well used parked is bad mouthed in some reviews as being full of shady people, but we noted many families having picnics and barbecues, swimming in the river, and lots of boaters. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. There are homeless folks there as well, but we were never bothered in any way by them,... More

This last weekend June 30, 2013 my son particpated in the Sacramento INTERNATIONAL Triathion. The start of the race begain on the south side of the American River in Discovery Park. "Did I mention it was an INTERNATIONAL race." The trash cans were full and overflowing. It was apparent that the trash had not been picked up for some time.... More

Like to ride my bike around there on the bike trail which goes through the park. Certain areas of the park make one feel less safe than others, but there are usually other people and bike riders around.

It is a good, protected launch ramp area and dock, and it can get VERY Crowded at times, so you have to be patient. If you launch solo like I do, it is a bit more of a challenge, so bring a friend who can at least back the boat and trailer the last few feet, then you can get... More
