The inside was impressive but parts of the exterior could do with painting and the surrounding park is very down in the mouth. Compared to the Denver Capitol, it is disappointing. Come on California, you can do better than that!

Free guided tours are available of the capitol by going to basement room B-27. There are several movies shown about CA history, a gift shop and restored rooms from the 1800's.

Great history, great capitol, lovely gardens. Wish there were fewer dedicated spaces. It gets a little cluttered with statues, veterans memorials, etc.

Wow, I was so surprised it was open on Sunday. We took the opportunity to walk the garden outstide and explore the Capitol. Having lived in DC for 2 years, I would say the State Capitol is a great representation of California and also really beautiful. Another great thing: it's free!

This is a must see place when visiting Sacramento. You can wander around the gardens outside and enjoy the greenery and flowers. Inside there are many hallways with picture vignettes depicting all of the California counties, pretty cool.

Outstanding day trip. Lots of history and beautiful architecture. Bring a camera. Be prepared to talk to your elected official...might bump into them in the hall. rlw

Did you know the Capitol and grounds are under multiple jurisdictions? Each house (assembly and senate) controls their chambers and offices, while General Services provides support, and Parks and recreation controls the basement gift shop, lobby, rotundra, and grounds.

The capitol building is beautiful inside and out, and the tours are interesting. Great little gift shop too. I grew up in Sacramento and have visited the capitol building a number of times, it's a great place to spend an hour or two.

Nice free tour of a lovely building. The legislature was in session and it was interesting to watch them work. Quick visit to the gift shop was fun. Did not have time to view the grounds but they looked great.
