I didn't know, until my Californian godson told me, that you can go inside the capitol buildings and look around. Obviously there is security screening but if you don't mind that then you're free to wander around the building - they have guards on the doors they don't want you to go in. We stood underneath the beautiful domed ceiling... More

The grounds are gorgeous, with memorials, exotic trees, fountains, etc. The guided tour of the Capitol was most informative and the building, very impressive. Outside of Washington, d.c., this is the prettiest Capitol and surrounding grounds. More

Pleasantly Surprised. I spent the day with my nephew and kept the expenses under $3/person all day. We spent $2/person x3 at Folsom Prison. We went downtown and spent $1.25 in meters at the State Capital and took the 1 hour tour, and then went downtown $1.75 to walk around old town Sacto. I had a great day for super... More

The Capitol, actually built in 1869 following the gold rush that began 20 years earlier, was quite an edifice for a city that was barely 20 years old. It is still very impressive, especially the Senate and Assembly chambers. Free tours are available and add immensely to understanding what you are seeing. Food is available in a small cafeteria on... Chaperoned my daughter's 3rd grade field trip here. The docent was knowledgeable and kept the kids engaged (tough job). We saw the senate room (empty on break), she explained even decorative elements (tile in main lobby, lights in hall). Fun fact, she mentioned a class tour group that encouraged the state bug selection; didn't have one before. More

We were passing through from Tahoe to San Fran and needed a break. Had read the reviews and had to stop in for a peak. Small tour group runs every hour with a very informative (but a little geeky) tour guide. Being from Canada, we did not know much about California politics (with the exception being Arnie). Cool to see... More

I haven't been to any other state capitol buildings, so I don't have a point of reference, but I think the California Capitol Building is pretty special. It has beautiful architecture, and a nice park setting with beautiful rose gardens and OLD stately trees. (I cooordinated a few wedding ceremonies in the gardens, and the photos from these are some... More
