The Capitol, actually built in 1869 following the gold rush that began 20 years earlier, was quite an edifice for a city that was barely 20 years old. Chaperoned my daughter's 3rd grade field trip here. The docent was knowledgeable and kept the kids engaged (tough job). We saw the senate room (empty on break), she explained even decorative elements (tile in main lobby, lights in hall). Fun fact, she mentioned a class tour group that encouraged the state bug selection; didn't have one before. More
