The California Museum is like the People magazine of museums. Most of the exhibits are profiles of famous people who have lived in California. You don't have to be born in California to be celebrated in this museum. It is not very large. We went to the museum for the special Peanuts exhibit from the Charles Shultz museum in Santa Rosa.... This museum is pretty poor for two reasons. First of all it advertises itself as the "California Museum" (that is how Trip Advisor lists it as well.) In reality the name of the museum is the "California Museum for History, Women and the Arts." If we had known that we would have never wasted the time and money to visit... More

If you don't know much about the history of California this is the place to head for. Spread over two levels (don't miss the outside 'Rights' wall). Four of us spent three hours there on a quiet Saturday and hadn't expected to enjoy it so much. Many highlights for me including the section on native Americans, natural history and the... More

As a lifelong resident of the Sacramento area, I can tell that this museum is mostly meant for school children and out of state visitors. The museum really doesn't have any eye-catching artifacts in its collection, (no priceless artwork or original gold spike here) but it does have an amazing amount of information about the state of California, and, perhaps... Californians will love this museum and appreciate all it has to offer in the history of the state. From the 49'r Gold Rush to Hollywood stars to Silicon Valley lore - it's a treat to walk around and learn how much California has contributed to our country.

In a weird location, but close to the Capitol. Lots of California-related exhibits about famous Californians, Native peoples, immigrants, etc. No cafe. Worth a visit.

This place was low attended. I assumed it was because of Black Friday after Thanksgiving, but the place wasn't very good. The first display area was on soda and diabetes and the next area was on Japanese Internment. The first floor items were political or irrelevant. The second floor displays were focused on the native heritage of the state. This... More

An interesting quick museum trip, it is worth it. Not enough time in the museum is spent on the early pre european California. Did enjoy the pieces on the Missions. Quite interesting. Not to sure if the Maria Shriver section did much for me. The Japanese internment piece was well done and glad to see it.

Traveled in May! Using Sacramento Gold Card for the hotel guests! They at time had exhibit about "Junk Drinks" Interesting, many ill effects for those that drink these kind drinks! I so glad I cannot stand drinks as these, the carbonation makes me vomit! I also like hands on exhibits! One area, get piece paper, rub over the picture! Rubbed... More
