There are actual trains on display! Somehow seems like the museum was built probably inside a platform coz we saw a lot of embedded train tracks here, which was a unique experience. The displays were really nice and impressive. There was a lot of information bout the California Gold Rush. The interior is all about trains and has a miniature display... More

The California State Railroad Museum was amazing. There was lots of information about the California Gold Rush, and, of course, lots of trains.

My kids played with Brio trains when they were kids and they would've enjoyed this place if we visited in their youth. Lots of large, REAL trains. Some still drive, I've been told and they move them around when they have events at the museum. Some have been restored so beautifully on the outside. We were able to walk inside... More

There are a few absolutely HUGE old locos in here, together with some that wouldn't look out of place in a film or in a Western on TV. Good surrounding info & artefacts. A definite for railway fans.

Original vintage locomotives and railroad cars. Great for the hobbyist, too. Even if trains aren't your thing, you have to be amazed at some of the steam engines.

This museum is outstanding and has so much history on the area and railroads in general. Watch out for those statutes....some are real!

When we have first time visitors to Sacramento, we always take them here (and to the State Capitol--see separate review). For anyone who even likes trains a little bit, this museum is fascinating. You can easily spend a day here if you want but 1-3 hours is a good plan. The staff is quite knowledgeable and can answer almost any... More

An impressive collection of everything to do with railways. Those engines are huge when you’re standing right up to them. Even the staff wear the period uniforms. Very detailed exhibits, very comprehensive, very much worth a visit.

Fabulous display of one of the most unique train engines ever made: Southern Pacific's cab forward engine. This engine is so big, they built the museum around it! A wonderful place for kids and adult train enthusiasts. Also the most complete set of Lionel O-gage trains I have ever seen

A fantastic museum. A step back in time. Made me want to board a train immediately. Actual period trains. Everybody friendly.
