The Sacramento River begins in Dunsmuir, CA, but really becomes active at the dam on the south end of Shasta Lake. There is a second dam at Keswick Lake. The river provides water all the way down to LA, and the dams are opened at varying speeds, depending on local and long distance needs. At times, the water seems to... More

From the headwaters in Mt. Shasta to the Delta towards the Bay, the Sacramento is a beautiful river all the way. There is fly fishing upstream in the canyons through Dunsmuir, Castella, and Sweetbriar as well as rafting, bass in Shasta Lake, trout and salmon as you go south, and delicious stripers and even sturgeon at the southernmost part. There... More

For a great day grab a tube or raft, some drinks(no glass), pack a lunch, and float....Such a relaxing experience...(cold butt with tube) but worth it! I even bring my kids sometimes and blow up my island and let them float with me...They looooove it...(with life jackets and they are good swimmers). NOTE: If you are looking for a quiet... More

Tubbing the Sacramento River when you visit Chico is a blast if you know the ropes. Most importantly, be safe,. By this I mean, pay attention to the current, snags, and what and how much you drink. Stop on the shore to rest if you get too cold. The water is freezing, even in summer. Get a good rubber tube,... More

The Sacramento River bisects Redding not far below Shasta Dam. Up to that point it is carving its way through narrow canyons, but at Redding the valley widens and so does the river, although it is kept behind levees lower down the valley. The river is noted for excellent fishing and boating. Above Shasta Lake, the reservoir formed by Shasta... More

There are really 2 sacramento rivers, one upstream from the dam, and the other downstream from it. The north section is wild and scenic, with many rapids and untouched boulder-strewn banks. After being slowed by 2 dams, however, the river is wide and tame and beautiful in a different way. More

There is a trail that is new and we have to opportunity to ride our bikes with our family. This trail started at Shasta Dam and went down to the Sundial Bridge, it is 18 miles but with our stops and resting we did it with 3 Kids ages 7-17 months fine. I know it seems like a lot but... More
