Petaluma suffers, relative to other Marin/Sonoma towns, from not having great hiking hills close to town. This little park is the best you can do without driving 30 minutes or farther. Nice variety of landscape and views, but only a small seasonal creek, and you can hike all the trails in a couple of hours. I like the South Loop... More

A bit off the beaten path which means that there is always parking and not too many people. I assume kids would like it but we don't have kids so that is just a guess. There are several hiking trails, low to medium difficulty, many of which offer nice views.

Best local park one could ask for. Great for running or biking or riding horseback. Nice views and well maintained trails.

I love how this park has so many different trails. I really like how you can find shaded trails and there are different hiking levels. It is also very beautiful!

Living in Petaluma, this park is perfect for getting out and doing some trail running. It does not have an extensive array of trails, but for a good 2-3 mile aerobic workout, it can't be beat. I have the Sonoma Parks pass so I get up there 3-4 times a week - otherwise, the parking fee is $8. Popular on... More

Helen Putnam Park, once you get to know the trails, is easily my favorite park in all of Sonoma County. I've probably hiked here forty times over twenty years. It's never crowded, for one thing, and the trails, particularly on the high hill area (if you climb up the hill from the parking lot toward the tree at the top)... More

Very nice park with rolling trails and lots of shade. Close to the city as well. Like the little pond nestled in the site as well. Used by equestrians as well. There is a bathroom near the parking lot. But my main message is be aware that there is a $7 parking charge for day use. Not a huge amount... More

I moved to Petaluma a few years ago from Marin and missed the great hiking trails. I adopted a dog soon after moving to Petaluma and started looking for good places to take him, this is one of my favorites. It's not large, but you can do a few loops and take more time. There are a couple of good... More

Helen Putnam Park is open space on the rolling hills just west of Petaluma. This is a lovely, safe place to enjoy easy hiking. It is hard to believe it is so close to a city.
