It only takes about 40 minutes to get to Idyllwild and the road is nowhere near as scary as everyone makes it out to be. There are twists and turns but spectacular scenery all the way. You can drive up, have lunch, take a look around, and drive back down in an afternoon. The changes in vegetation and geology are... More

but, don't bother if the humidity / haze is up. It is superb when the valley air is clear. The loop thru Garner Valley is so pretty, and the little town of Idyllwild is worth a stop for lunch..

What a fantastic way to get out of Palm Springs and into other local cities!! This is a road that requires your full attention, that is for sure, but if you can watch the road and handle lots of tight turns and cutbacks, the scenery is worth it! This route will take you through the back country and through several... More

This is a perfect shortcut from SD to PS, I like driving this road for the various landscapes it get me through. There is nothing scary, it only need to pay attention. View is breathtaking. And if you think this is scaring ( as I read in many reviews) don't even think about engage yourself in driving on the Alps!

Our Garmin led us on this ridiculous shortcut on our way to San Diego. Nothing but rising switchbacks all the way to the top! It is scary the entire route until you get to the top and it turns into gorgeous pines and a western-horse-town kind of feeling. My husband drove and I did NOT let him look. I am... More

The only really, really dangerous parts of the road are the seven or so miles directly above the Coachella Valley. The views from the rest area are spectacular; all the way to the Salton Sea if the air is clear. The hazard are the drivers (inexperienced; distracted)and vehicles (towing something; RV) that shouldn't be on the road.... This is a... More

This road scared me to death, and gave me nightmares. It's straight up, very curvy, and the sides are shear drops down on both sides. There's no turning back, there's no turning off, once you're on it - your fate is sealed. I can not attest to the views as I was the driver who kept my eyes on the... More

Beautifully maintained two-lane highway from Anza to Palm Desert--a descent from Pinyon Pine of over 4,000 feet. Breathtaking, white-knuckle turns and drop-offs; and a spectacular view over the desert valley and mountain ranges beyond. Do it!

Read about this road and it is true it is one great experience. I dreamt of doing it in a Porsche but had to settle for a rental Chrysler 200 still a lot of fun. Take time for a few stops and enjoy the trip!
