Wish we had more time to explore this great museum

My parents and I went here for about 2 1/2 hours, which was definitely not enough time to explore the museum (granted, I have a somewhat leisurely pace in museums). The rotating exhibit, which is currently on pacific islanders was surprisingly well done for something that isn't a permanent exhibit. The "History Gallery" did an amazing job of walking through... Since the completion of its recent renovation, the Oakland Museum hosts a variety of hands-on, interactive learning stations in all three of its permanent galleries, including California Art, History and Natural Science. Visitors old and young are often found circling the nature dioramas looking for different animals within. Their First Friday night events, paired with an assortment of street vendors,... More

This version of the Oakland (there have been others in my lifetime) is all about California. If you want to know anything about California over the last 200 years, this is the place for you. If you have school age kids this is the place for you. Lots of interesting things for all ages. There is an adjacent hall on... More

As a recent transplant to the Bay Area from out of state, I thought I would check out this museum. I gave myself 3 hours, thinking that would be plenty of time. I was wrong! The California History section took about 2 hours to visit. It was very entertaining and I learned soooo much about the history of this amazing... More

This is our local art, history and natural history museum. It offers a lot and the grounds are very nice. I went to Junior College across the street. Events are held there from music in the hall, picnics in the courtyard and they even hosted an Occupy Oakland protest where tear gas was sprayed in a residential neighborhood. Quickly put,... More

There is so much more than meets the eye! I've been here for a fundraiser - Girl's Inc, first Friday's Oakland event and to enjoy the art of course!! IF you should need a large enough venue for +500 people this is it... The grounds are huge in the middle of the museum - large enough to segregate different sorts... More

Wasn't the best small museum we've ever been to. Still we enjoyed the exhibits and art. Light on artifacts; nevertheless, still seemed quite informative and factual. Probably wouldn't return unless there was a particular exhibit we were interested in. Still, if you have a few hours to kill in Oakland, you could do a lot worse.

We went for their Friday night music. It was awesome! They had Polynesian dancers, a DJ, a bar for the adults, food trucks, and an open-air dance party. So much fun! If you get a chance, go!

My son, my husband and I went here intending to make a brief visit, but ended up spending hours. The interactive exhibits covering all eras of California history are well done, educational and fun. No history buff will want to miss this.

I have lived off and on in Oakland several times over the past 35 years, but only recently did I visit the Oakland Museum of California. I could have kicked myself for not going sooner. I went for a special exhibit for "dia de los muertos" and also viewed the art of Diego Rivera and Frieda Kahlo on display, which... More
