The museum is well designed has a large variety of exhibits and is on par with some of the larger more well known museums in the country. I try to go to museums in most of the Major cities and I don't think you would be disappointed if you've seen other large museums.

I have been to the Bay area a half dozen times and have "seen all the major tourist attractions" before. However, I had never finished up looking over those in the Oakland area so focused on that area during our current 10 day tour of the L.A and S.F areas. I had originally set my mind on visiting the USS... More

We went on a Friday night. perfect combination ...some art, great music and food trucks. Use the Off the Grid app to look up which food trucks are there and choose ahead of time. The lines are long but go quickly.

The Oakland Museum of California is a natural history, California history, and California art museum. The natural history of California is, not unexpectedly, intriguing. But the California history level is a must visit for any visitor of any age to the area; it will make you feel part of the history of the state even if you are in town... More

This place is really 3 museums in one: California history, California art, and California natural history. Each section is on its own level, and there is a very good cafe. All 3 are high-quality museums that merit visits on their own. But combined, you get a great picture of the natural and cultural heritage of California. The displays are interesting... More

Wow! A fabulous place to spend an afternoon. Very interesting exhibits all about California. It has interactive exhibits and the Natural History is well done. It's perfect for kids. The collection of Native American baskets is extensive, located in California history. You can tell that the powers of be, took the time to design a welcoming, thoughtful museum. First Sundays... We live a little over an hour north of this area and are always surprised when we encounter people who have never heard of this museum. The presentations are done in such a way that both children and adults will enjoy their experience. The art, history and natural science exhibits are all worth seeing so plan on spending a few... This was a welcome surprise! A museum where curators are obviously prized, where creativity in presentation is excellent, and substance matches the stylistic presentations. We noodled around just the art floor for over an hour and had an excellent time! They did provide a wheelchair for one of us, and the cafe was great!

I visited with three friends and we all really enjoyed the floor of exhibits on California history. They spanned a rather astonishing array of topics, each with visuals, a bit of text, short audio clips, and some hands on activities. We easily filled 2 hours on that floor alone! The art and natural history exhibits were good, but not the... More

What a great museum and tucked away from the heart of SF in Oakland which is either a pain as for non car drivers it was another long trudge from our SF hotel using the slow overground public transport and then from the Oakland ferry terminal(check out the timings as pre summer schedule there aren't many crossings and note when... Thank you for your great review! We love having visitors to the Oakland Museum of California from out of town—or, in this case, across the pond! As you noted, the Museum is very accessible by BART, only 1 block from the Lake Merritt BART Station. Taking the ferry is a nice option as well, and usually, taxis are available at... More
