What a great museum and tucked away from the heart of SF in Oakland which is either a pain as for non car drivers it was another long trudge from our SF hotel using the slow overground public transport and then from the Oakland ferry terminal(check out the timings as pre summer schedule there aren't many crossings and note when... This is an excellent museum for locals. The exhibits change regularly and it is a palatable amount of art, history, local culture and the environment. Each floor has a theme so if you want to skip history you can, but I wouldn't if I were you! It is amazing!!! You get a fantastically interactive way to learn the history of... More

Excellent art curation has afforded this small museum to be relevant. The Pixar sponsored movie theater often has a good film, well worth checking the monthly offerings if you are in the area.

I was pleasantly surprised on my visit to this museum. We went on a free day with another family. What impressed me the most was the wide variety of the subject matter. I loved the art collection. Everyone including the kids enjoyed the many interactive devices and studio in the California history section. There is a cafe don't about food... More

This is California's museum. There are three floors, for Art, Natural History and History, set in gardens with koi ponds and sculptures. It is near Lake Merritt, and worth many visits. The Art floor was completely renovated a few years ago, and now there are many interactive displays to attract children as well as adults.

I'm a local Oakland-er who travels the world. This museum shocked and amazed me. Tourists should definitely visit this museum. Take BART to the Lake Merritt Station. On a nice day you'll love walking around Lake Merritt too. The California-specific attractions are top-notch. Great place to get a comprehensive and interesting California history lesson going back to the prehistoric. Exhibits... More

Something for all ages here. This museum has several galleries; one for every member of the family! We especially enjoyed the current "Vinyl" exhibit with it's turntables, headphones, and eclectic mix of albums to listen to. Great amount of interaction in every part of the museum. Spent over 3 hours here and didn't even get to see the entire collections!... More

The Oakland Museum is a great place to take the family and introduce children to the museum setting. I'm a firm believer in exposing children to the arts and teaching them to appreciate the museum world of discovery. The California exhibit is well displayed with hands-on exhibits for the children. It's not crowded and you're able to converse & move... More

We didn't have much time to really go through this museum in depth, but we really enjoyed what we saw. We really got into the art section, a range of art media displayed in a great setting. Not to be missed!

I saw the California gold rush exibit. The only thing it had hor an african American was a poster of a slave ship. I tried to contact someone to discuss this, because I KNOW there were black people who contributed and it was overlooked as most things are when it comes to us. Pleas edo not bother with the 'all...
