We were there on only one occasion, which was a Friday in Nov. before the Food Truck and Live Music night. It was a blast and we would have loved to go back if we'd had time. We took our 2 3/4 year old grand daughter, so that sort of slowed us down, but it was very interactive and she... More

There is much knowledge to be gathered from this museum. Other than the occasional special exhibits there is the history of California display. I especially like the nature section. This is a place for adults as well as children. Bring the lite ones and let them explore and learn. The gift shop is also worth a visit. The staff is... More

OMCA offers a great overview of the art, history and natural history of the state. Exhibits include artifacts from the native Americans, the Spanish colonies, the gold rush and CA in the 20th century. Lots of great California painters and sculptors are included in the permanent collections. Great time to go is Friday night when there are food trucks, music,... More

On a recent trip to Oakland, I enjoyed a visit to the Oakland Museum. I would recommend this attraction to any art, state history, or natural history lover. A bit of something for all. The museum is organized well and has easy access. Seating areas are plentiful for resting and/or contemplating exhibits. I especially enjoyed the many hands-on opportunities available,... More

Outstanding design. Fascinating history of California exhibit. Interesting if not extensive permanent collection. Interesting special exhibits often centering on Oakland. Great Dia Del Muerte exhibition every year. Next to Lake Merritt, another place to hang out.

Being between Frisco and Berkeley is a two-edged sword. On one hand, hardly anybody ever hears about Oakland, apart from BART cop Johannes Mehserle murdering Oscar Grant. On the other hand, hardly anybody ever hears about Oakland, apart from BART cop Johannes Mehserle murdering Oscar Grant. What this boils down to is that Oakland's treasures are largely unknown, which, for... More

The museum and staff are great. I wish there were better hours for visiting the exhibits. It's hard to schedule the right time.

Unfortunately I only had time to visit the history section. It was excellent - from native American times through to the railways, the 50s and modern times. Opening times are different each day. $15 entrance for an adult. BART: Lake Merritt

We were pleasantly surprised to go to the museum and find this community celebration going on. As well as enjoying the museum exhibits, the cafe, and the blossoming bouganvilla, there was native dancing, explanation of the culture and event, and booths for kids and adults alike. It was a great Sunday afternoon.

Been living in Oakland for more than 10 years, visited this museum about 8 years ago, it was not so good. Revisited this year after their renovation, and it was great. The exhibition has a lot of interaction parts where you can play around with stuff. It almost feels like it was inspired by The Exploratorium. Although there is a... More
