I've only visited the art wing of this museum, but I recommend it heartily to any visitor to Oakland -- and it's worth crossing the bay for, if you're in San Francisco with time to spare. The museum has wisely focused on the art of its state and it has amassed a remarkable collection. It has a good cafe, too.

Such a gem. First Sunday always free. Don't miss natural history exhibits on lowest level. Great cafe with jazz combo on weekends.

The California Museum is a truly great place to visit. I sent a couple of my globally savvy friends from out of town there recently (while I was at work!) and they told me they enjoyed it far more than the de Young which they went to the day before. The exhbits are varied - from California history to a... More

Easy access, parking and entry. I have been to several exhibitions-all well, interesting and unique. The museum is clean and well maintained. I recommend for an outing away from the usual sightseeing options.

I love this museum. I think what I like most is that it makes art, and history and science interactive. Kids can explore while parents explore. They bring in really interesting temporary exhibits that reflect California's history, as well our country's history. Learning about where we all came from and how we got here is interesting to me. Its also... More

Been there several times. Taking an art history class and was fun to see some of the art I studied there. Love the "Small things" room :)

If you are visiting Oakland you should really check out the Oakland Museum of California. It's probably too big to see everything in one visit, but you can choose history, art, or natural history and just submerge yourself if excellent museum craft in a beautiful setting. The cafe is very good. And there's an outdoor dining area that I love... More

The museum had a splendid special exhibit of Diego Rivera and other artists. However its regular exhibition space is very compelling. They have done a great job of presenting the history of California and its culture. No easy task. As well as a very nice natural history museum focusing also on California. We spent all day at the Museum and... More
