Really does what it does well - it is a museum of California. Art? One floor is paintings and sculpture by California artists (and others - I think during periods they were in California). It's a wonderful collection. Also, the history and natural sciences sections are a great way to understand California. Really, this museum is a treat to visit.

Its cheaper than average fancy museums . ok there is no VanGogh or Picasso pieces to see but there are plenty of decent art and Friday night have lots of good food, good wine and free live music. perfect for families and couples who are looking for some cheap fun.

With 3 sections — history, natural science, and art — plus special exhibits, OMCA has something for everybody. Interactive exhibits in the history section (add sound effects to silent films, don superhero costumes like you're at ComicCon) might be aimed at kids, but we found them fun for adults too. You could spend hours here going through all 3 main... More

Oakland Museum has some exhibits all the time but like any museum also has changing exhibits. There are free days several times a year.

This is an excellent teaching museum. The John Muir exhibit is outstanding. The floor plan is easy to follow and most exhibits are hands on teaching tools. Having known the Museum in the 1970's and seeing it today is really impressive.the gift shop and cafe are also quite good. Enjoyed the experience greatly

A must see treasure in the Bay Area. It provides a great history of California. There is also a whole floor devoted to the natural world here. It hits the trifecta; human, natural, and art history of this amazing state.

After reading the reviews, I decided to bring my family here. We weren't disappointed. There's something for everybody. I'm a history buff, so I enjoyed the history gallery. My wife loved the art gallery and my whole family appreciated the natural sciences floor. There is a nice garden area for frolicking and picnicking as well as a koi pond. We... More

Every out-of-town visitor that I've taken to OMCA loves it. The art collection is excellent (not the big-name French Post-Impressionists, etc, but a compelling variety of stimulating and thoughtfully selected masterpieces). Temporary exhibitions are always high-quality. The California history section is top-notch. I always try to squeeze in a quick visit to the impressive Asian snuff-bottle collection which includes many... More

The museum was features in my travel book and I was determined to get there. I was not disappointed. The history of human habitation in California was so well illustrated. there were so many interesting exhibits. It is only abot 150 metres from the Lake Merrett subway station. A 20 minute ride from downtown San Francisco.
