Great art exhibit apart from a good history section that takes you through the story of California (gold rush et al) . Go on a friday, since there's a nice, genuine neighborhood gathering with food trucks, live music and dance - this is a great introduction to the oakland vibe.

On some Friday's, the museum stays open late and admission costs less. There are food carts, dancing, music - a real neighborhood gathering and lots of fun. We enjoyed the variety of exhibits, from furniture design to painting.

The Oakland Museum combines high quality history (of CA), natural science and art exhibitions in one multi-level space. We enjoyed the joint California art exhibit with the San Francisco MOMA. You can easily spend a full day at this museum. The food at the museum cafe was a pleasant surprise.

We spent Friday evening at the museum; none of us had ever been there before so we were surprised to see how much there was to enjoy. Friday night is 1/2 price night so that was a bonus. The history of California was very interesting as was the Day of the Dead exhibit. We didn't have enough time to spend... More

I've only visited the art wing of this museum, but I recommend it heartily to any visitor to Oakland -- and it's worth crossing the bay for, if you're in San Francisco with time to spare. The museum has wisely focused on the art of its state and it has amassed a remarkable collection. It has a good cafe, too.

Such a gem. First Sunday always free. Don't miss natural history exhibits on lowest level. Great cafe with jazz combo on weekends.
