The Grand Lake is an old-school theater right next door to Lake Merritt. The main theater is huge and the smaller side and upstairs theaters are cozy. All are beautifully decorated. All shows before 6 PM are only $6 and on Wednesdays they throw in a free small bag of popcorn. It's hard to beat a deal like that!

Not so favorable of a review for this theater.... sorry to say. A great history and a once-great theater that has been let go. A thorough cleaning and a little face lift would be a good start. Friendly staff- that's a true story. Can't complain about that but I think I would chose to go to another location for my... More

I've never been in an old theater like this before, and it didn't disappoint. I was embarrassing my boyfriend by taking so many pictures. I was surprised to see it in its original glory. The staff was very helpful and kind with a small mishap about the online tickets.

The Grand Lake is an Oakland icon and deservedly so. Although this movie palace has been subdivided into smaller theaters, it has retained an old world charm. The main theater is large and has an organ which they play on Saturday nights. Seeing a movie here feels exciting - like it did "back in the day".

If you enjoy the feeling of entering a real theater cinema this is the place. From velvet curtains to motif covered walls, old projectors, marble bathrooms but the best is $5 early bird tickets. This is undoubtedly a gem in the heart of Oakland and stands out amongst the dismal scenes on some of the nearby streets!

Great old theatre close to numerous restaurants and bars for enjoying before or after. Nice large theatres that are a little the worse for wear but bathrooms are clean. Friendly staff.

Treat yourself to theatre as it used to be. The building is grand. The ownership is socially conscious, a progressive voice in the community too. We love supporting them and always check their movies before any other. Park in the public lot a half block down Grand Avenue. Back streets are metered too.

Love coming to this theater which is located near many restaurants. Theater has old school vibe with decor, comfortable chairs and seems less inclined to attract out of control teenagers. Great theater to bring young ones then have a quick bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

The Grand Lake theater is indeed grand. Featuring a beautiful old time design in its main theater, a grand Wurlitzer is featured on weekends before the feature. The theater is also community-connected, offering special local events and commentary on political issues on its billboard. The movie selections are mainstream as opposed to those offered at an art house. If you... More

I've been going here for years! My favorite theaters are the small ones to the side... There's one with an Egyptian theme... Than the bug theatre upstairs is huge! Plenty of room for everyone... Just love the Art Deco feel... Cannot be missed!
