This grand old 1920's theater has been restored and yet enjoys multiple venues which broke up the massive single theater of years past. It still enjoys the wonderful old time decorations. Some days the popcorn is free....the seats are comfortable and the bathrooms clean. A great place to watch first run movies in the East Bay.

Sure it's a blast from the past and yes they can't seem to drop the political banter on the marquee, but, if you allow yourself to move beyond the quirky neighborhood persona, you will find a Mighty Wurlitzer that rises from the orchestra pit, good mass market movies and a truly Grand Time for all.

Sometimes you can get lucky and hear the theater's amazing Wurlitzer Organ which magically rises up from the floor and is played for 10 to 15 minutes before selected Friday and Saturday evening performances in the downstairs theater. Fun!

This has to be one of the last of the grand old movie theatres in the Art Deco style of the 1920's complete with a Wurlitzer Organ which rises up from beneath the stage. Three smaller theatres have been hived off but the main theatre is just spectacular and is worth a visit on Friday or Saturday nights when the... More

This is one cool, quaint theater you'd so much love to visit frequently. This, perhaps, is the best movie theater that I have been to. You'd love the experience starting from the entrance, with the warm attitude of those selling tickets. This old theater is cozy and matinees are available at very affordable rates. The Grand Lake shows no ads,... More

This historic theater is beautifully restored, and has a real Wurlitzer organ in the main theater which is played before the show on Friday and Saturday nights. They also have a huge, amazing Tiffany window on display inside. This was the main theater in Oakland before the advent of the huge multiplex theaters. It was almost run out of business... More

in an old timer movie house. I love the political rap that is sometimes in bright lights on the marquee.

If you pay to go to a movie you shouldn't have to watch advertising like on TV but even louder. The Grand Lake has none of that. If you are lucky enough to be coming to see a great film shown in the main theater, you are likely to be surrounded by a crowd with a similar appreciation for the... More
