The Cathedral is an extremely modern Catholic church that is worth spending a few hours whether or not you are Catholic. It is extremely welcoming and provides a nice place to worship if you are inclined and a place to look at modern architecture if you are not.

This is a modern Catholic cathedral with a spectacular design, set across the street from Lake Merritt. The walls are composed of 1028 panels of patterned glass which diffuse light into the interior. The result is magnificent when you stand amidst the pews. Definitely worth a visit no matter one's religion.

The cathedral has a very modern design with lots of glass. The cathedral includes a mausoleum on a lower level where the cremains of loved ones can be interred. We had never seen this combination before.

Magnificent architecture, a serene environment, moving art, and a delightful gift shop made this well worth the trip. The Cathedral evokes the same awe as the old, stone Cathedrals but has a lightness and airiness due to the modern design. If you have time, walk around Lake Merritt too. Next time I plan to go for a docent-led tour and/or... More

We saw the sign about the tour while walking Lake Merritt and made time to come by after lunch. It was interesting and not too much religious dogma. Just enough so it all came together to make sense. Plan to spend at least an hour. There is a café and gift shop sharing the main square. Easy to find and... More

The modern structure places you in a state of mind of relaxation and peace. Easy location, close to public transit, sits across from Lake Merritt.

Beautiful do not just go for the Mass go down stairs. Breathtaking beauty. The 10 mass is a high mass. with just a cantor. My favorite.

Magnificent Catholic Church in the heart of Oakland. Architectural wonder that's worth visiting. Once inside you will be amazed the lights coming thru those glass panels creating the image of Jesus Christ seating, really amazing. Also don't forget to check the basement.

this is what a modern cathedral should look like! Bold architecture, great volume, beautiful lines, lots of wood? The structure speaks for itself and needs no statues or paintings as often found in cathedrals. The location on the shores of Lake Merritt is also great. Though not a religious person, I found the visit inspiring.
