this is what a modern cathedral should look like! Bold architecture, great volume, beautiful lines, lots of wood? The structure speaks for itself and needs no statues or paintings as often found in cathedrals. The location on the shores of Lake Merritt is also great. Though not a religious person, I found the visit inspiring.

If you don't care for the services just walk around this breathtaking church. The mausoleum downstairs is amazing; like stepping into an awe inspiring photo book. I can't explain how the marble and light take your senses into a whole new realm, it's just amazing!

This is contemporary architecture at its' finest. The use of wood and light on a massive scale is genius. Underneath are the crypts that are in the most peaceful setting you could envision. All this is right by Lake Merritt so you can combine the two for a wonderful experience. We have traveled the world and will be going to... More

This is the newest of cathedrals in California. It is set across the street from Oakland's Lake Merritt and has sweeping views of the lake and of the Oakland skyline. Inside the glass walls soar to the high ceiling and Christ's figure is in the glass from floor to ceiling. The organ has over 5,000 pipes and really packs a... More

Beautiful, minimalistic interior. Unbelievable acoustics. Heard the Oakland Symphony Chorus sing the Messiah here. Well worthwhile.

Amazing architecture. If you are a visitor or even a local, it is well worth visiting. They offer regular docent tours that give a deeper insight into the design features that show on the micro and macro sides, all were thoughtfully chosen. You don't have to be Catholic to enjoy this. Very welcoming people

This is a must see on your walk around Lake Merrit. No tripods allowed but photography is. It's an impressive modern cathedral and well worth a visit.
