The wall behind the altar is very impressive with a giant light picture of Jesus. It reminds us that God is beyond our imagination and that we are small in His Presence. Spend time to meditate and pray while enjoying the beauty of a modern cathredral. The bubbling fount at the entrance is a great effect, Jesus as living water.... More

Ultra-modern Cathedral, but has traditional Mass with talented Choir and organist. Overlooks Lake Merritt, and convenient to downtown Oakland and BART. Excellent Catholic bookstore (check for hours).

This cathedral is spectacular. I was especially impressed with the interplay among the chief elements--wood, glass, concrete--and the architectural details. This is an amazing site and well worth a visit.

The cathedral looks very modern from the outside but the interiors are warm and cozy, with all the wood and decoration. It is very impressive.

A spectacular piece of architecture shaped like an ark. A must see at Lake Merritt even if you are not religious.

the cathedral is easily accessible by the FREE broadway bus from downtown and the 2nd and 19th st bart station. with so many older buildings this is a so refreshing, dynamic to the old cathedral that burned down. in a beautiful park setting on a lake.

Some of the finest craftsmanship (stone and wood) that I've seen in a modern building--ever. The marble altar is a wonder to behold, and the small chapels are beautifully imagined. Get a docent tour (from Paul Bailey-Gates if you can arrange it) to get the full understanding of this architectural and spiritual masterpiece.

One of the most beautiful Churches I have ever seen. An amazing gem in Oakland. Oakland gets a bad rap as San Francisco's ugly sister. However if you look closely, you can find amazing places like Christ the light. I recently read an article that listed this a one of 10 most beautiful churches in the US. Go see it!!

Architecture is amazing! Absolutely breathtaking... One thing I didn't know is that they also offer a resting place for loved ones that have moved on downstairs....
