People seem to think Oakland is some scary, violent place. I was even in MEXICO and someone who lived there asked me where I lived. "Oakland!? That's dangerous, right?" And frankly I should be careful about disabusing that notion, so as to prevent my neighborhood from being overrun by techie- and hipster-driven gentrification. So let me just add this -... More

Very large, beautiful lake with a paved path around it. Lots of benches and shady areas for a nice picnic. And if you're a runner, a great place to run while enjoying a great view. The lake also has gondola's that you can rent and eat on while they take you around the lake!

I was watching the 4th game, SF Giants vs Washington Nationals. I got side tracked and gave review for the Paramount Theatre instead for Grand Lake Theatre. So, everything I said about the Grand Lake Theatre was meant for the Paramount Theatre with the old fashioned charm, grand staircase and beautiful interior. The GRAND LAKE theatre is in a good... Since Oakland generally has pretty clear skies most of the year along with moderate temps, this is a nice go-to place if you're in the neighborhood and have a few extra hours for relaxing and great scenery. A great place for birders, this was an original protected national wildlife habitat. Partly filled from the estuary, the lake is a mixture... More

Excellent place to stroll, walk, run, ride a bike or skate. Very safe. Unfortunately there is still one area of the lake where the pavement is missing, but this does not detract from its beauty.

Put on your walking shoes for this trip! For me, the best time to walk is early morning--less crowded so I can enjoy the quiet of the morning and the beauty of the season changes--during Spring and Fall---the colors...!!!

What a great little Oasis in Oakland. I had no idea such a nice calming little area existed. This are feels more like Colorado. Good choice of emerging restaurants, inexpensive parking, nice size lake, with a pavilion that is great for kids, dogs, and anyone looking for a little break.

We enjoyed walking around this lovely lake area which had a very nice playground and nature center. Glad we stopped and took advantage of the peacefulness.

Lake Merritt is beautiful! Whether you're there to go for a run, a stroll, or even just kickback with a blanket and picnic under a tree it's a great place to spend your spare time. Especially during nice warm days, the sun glistens onto the lake and the site is absolutely beautiful.

Lake Merritt in Oakland is like an oasis in the desert...literally. It is an attractive tidal estuary I think it ' s called where water birds tend to migrate and co exist with the natives. It's surrounded by high priced real estate, cultural entities and the like. However don't be so sure about Lake Merritt. Be aware that 20 or so... More
