One of the main attractions on the shore of Lake Merritt is the botanical gardens, a wonder of exotic species as well as an exception bonsai garden. There is no fee to enter the garden, but there is a parking fee of $2 for the nearby area.

We walked halfway around the lake near the playground and by the "bird refuge" cage, which was empty. The manmade islands in the lake were overgrown and unkempt. The sidewalks are broken and cracked, the lake itself smells bad and is brackish. There were quite a few people walking and jogging around the lake, but there is no way I... More

Awesome to take a stroll/jog around the lake, you can also picnic in the green area around the lake. There is Children's Fairyland very close to the lake, and the farmers market every Saturday on Grand - so just buy food from the farmers market and enjoy at the lake waterfront! At night, the lake is all lit up and... More

Having attended a wedding at the Camron-Stanford house the day before, we rented kayaks at the Lake Merritt Boating center and spent a pleasant hour circling the lake and getting a view of the wedding venue from the water.

Scary ! Drug infested hotel and area. Drug needles in hallway. Dirty rooms. High turnover on staff. Give your room away even if prepaid and double-confirmed!! Trip Advisory, take note!

If you are in Oakland and want to get outside, take the 3.4 mile walk around Lake Merritt. Canadian Geese are everywhere!

The efforts by conservationists to save Lake Merritt have been rewarded with recent sightings of a river otter and a stingray exploring the lake. The path around the lake is an excellent way to clear the mind and gain a perspective of the urban life of downtown Oakland.

Lake Merritt reminds one of a European village: shops, restaurants, and apartments surround a lovely, newly landscaped large lake where one least expects it. Walk or jog the paths, picnic and watch the ducks and geese, watch kids play soccer on the weekends, rent a paddle boat, meditate and soak in the sun; it all happens here! A stroll at... More
