My daughter, her sons -my grandchildren-and I often stroll around Lake Merritt. It is a great chance to talk, let the children run or bicycle while we burn some calories. The children like to feed the Canadian geese pieces of bread. It is a walk well used by runners and hikers with or without their dogs. There are birds and... More

Lake Merritt lots activities! Named for Samuel Merritt, a mayor here in Oakland way way way back when! People walk or jog laps! There are the Canada geese, little herons, coots, gulls! Many people think Canada geese are vicious, for most part they do leave people alone Ah yes, the occasional squirrel! Sometimes there are bands or other performers here!... More

Lake Merritt is a great place to walk, run, have a little picnic, barbeque, get a little boat, or hang out and people watch. Great restaurants nearby. Lots of amazing people in Oakland.

A beautiful place for lunch or brunch. Right on the shore of Lake Merritt - you can eat on an outside deck, right on the water. Food was fine, but the waitstaff seemed somewhat disorganized and careless. Long wait for a reserved table, pretty erratic service. It's a shame, because the food was excellent and the setting is uniquely beautiful.

Lake Merritt in Oakland is truly a Diamond for the City of Oakland. The city of Oakland itself is such an amazing place to live in. What amazes me the most about the city of Oakland is it's diversity. I think this is the worldly melting pot of Cultures. Honestly, I have met people from all over the World in... More

On a recent visit to the area to visit my daughter we went for an evening walk to this lake, which is a jewel in the center of Oakland. She did not realize that it is a birdwatcher's delight - I was pointing out night herons, a flock of American White Pelicans, and other interesting birds. I found out after... More

As a lover of water, it's great to have a lake in the middle of Oakland. Locals use the lake abundantly for exercise, bird watching, picnics and boating. I mostly appreciate the aesthetic beauty and serenity of the lake as I'm making my weekly trek to the library.

Beautiful. First bird sanctuary in US. Great to walk around, hang out, picnic, jog, walk your dog. Lots of great places around the lake to eat, have really good espresso, drink a beer or glass of wine. Easy parking or public transportation access.

Lake Merritt is Oakland's version of Central Park or Golden Gate Park and the city takes care to keep it great. It is about a three mile loop around the lake and hundreds do it once or more each day. Weekends will find crews in skiffs and/or dragon boats. Evenings have gondola rides.

I'm a recent NYC transplant that's moved two blocks from the lake. The view is amazing and a walk around the lake allows you to have various brushes with nature. You can also rent kayaks or a gondola from the Boathouse and cruise the lake itself. Worth visiting for a daytrip if visiting the Bay Area!
