Lake Merritt in Oakland is like an oasis in the desert...literally. It is an attractive tidal estuary I think it ' s called where water birds tend to migrate and co exist with the natives. It's surrounded by high priced real estate, cultural entities and the like. However don't be so sure about Lake Merritt. Be aware that 20 or so... More

The public gardens at lake Merritt are clean and beautiful and free to the public. They offer a chance to learn about many of the plants through well placed placards and labels. There are many places to sit and people watch as well as picnic or simply lay on the grass.

Great place to meet locals & just partake of the local community. There was music, dancing, food, kids - just a great overall vibe.

My mother had explained to me that the end fighting scene in "The Incredibles" was modeled after Lake Merritt. She was not lying. I could see each building they used and the lake was just the same- given a few decades apart. It was awesome to see that attraction.

My favorite place for walking, either with friends or by myself. The botanical gardens are beautiful and free. Little museums and activity centers for children are located all throughout the park. Children's Fairyland is right by the lake. So is the public library and the courthouse and a historical house museum. Many places to rent for weddings and such. And... More

I have lived by the lake for a number of years and have enjoyed the transition to a beautiful green and lush area. The plants are finally established and add the atmosphere of relaxation and tranquility. My only issue is with the massive amount of geese that sometime leave their droppings in an otherwise clean environment. I still love to... More

One of the main attractions on the shore of Lake Merritt is the botanical gardens, a wonder of exotic species as well as an exception bonsai garden. There is no fee to enter the garden, but there is a parking fee of $2 for the nearby area.

We walked halfway around the lake near the playground and by the "bird refuge" cage, which was empty. The manmade islands in the lake were overgrown and unkempt. The sidewalks are broken and cracked, the lake itself smells bad and is brackish. There were quite a few people walking and jogging around the lake, but there is no way I... More
