This is a nice urban lake to walk around and see the Oakland skyline from the interior. The walk is about 3.5 miles. It is safe as many people use the pathways for walking and jogging. The only downside is the many geese who litter their droppings throughout - so watch your step.

Awesome view of the city. Its nice and big. Good for a family picnic or just to sit or walk. A lot of people do exercise around the lake, there was also a farmers market near by so you could just go and grab some fresh organic fruits.

We love to walk neighborhoods around the world and instead of going up into the hills to hike, we walked around the lake. It was delightful. Birds to see, different building styles, etc. We stopped at the Scottish Rite temple for a tour, stopped after lunch at the Lake Café (yum) to tour the Cathedral of Christ the Light and... More

I had a pleasant walk around the lake, lots of people during the day but I especially enjoyed it at sunset. Always felt safe.

Lots of bird andele watching. Great place for exercise. Provides a very nice scenic stroll. It has a lot of interesting history that is good to understand and recognize how the lake has changed over the years.

I was in Oakland one-two times a month for work, and I would always make a point of doing a fitness walk at Lake Merritt during my visit. It's definitely a gem in the middle of the city, always lots of people taking advantage of a little bit of nature in middle of it all.

Beautiful haven in the middle of a busy urban environment. Nice walk all the way around (about three miles). Incredible gardens and a bonsai garden within.

Part of the Oakland Estuary, Lake Merritt has its ups and downs. It is a nice downtown lake with a walking trail emcompassing the entire Lake (around 3 miles). It's relatively fine to walk around during daylight hours, but I wouldn't risk it after dark. Before you wonder, I've been an Oakland resident for 30 years, most of the time... More

For many years Oakland had a reputation for crime. It's a shame, really, because Oakland has been renewed over the years and is for the most part safe, culturally diverse and very interesting. My favorite Sunday walk is around Lake Merritt. In the past years, the paths and plantings around the lake have been renewed or remodeled. Even the lake... More

Beautiful place to go on a picnic whether with your love one's or friends. The place is very diverse and gives the opportunities to see people from all walks of live as well as their cultures.
