I am a local Oaklander. I walk the approximately three mile perimeter of the lake two to three times a week. A flat walk which gives one a view of this central neighborhood. Along the Grand Avenue side, there are occasional restaurants. The lake is a bird sanctuary. Here is a link with more detailed informations.http://www.lakemerrittinstitute.org/about_lake.ht

I actually see this lake everyday when I'm not traveling as I live nearby. The landscaping and sidewalks are newly redone on about half the distance around. Hundreds of people walk, run, skate or bike around it everyday. There is a lot of creativity in the diverse population that is Oakland. You may see trick bikes with toasters and other... More

I live in Oakland and spend a lot of time in the environs of Lake Merritt - reportedly the only saltwater lake fully contained in an urban setting. The 5k perimeter is beautifully landscaped with a path framed with long grasses and pretty blooms. This makes for a great place to run or walk and no matter how regularly I... More

With the ugrading it's a wonderful place to visit and enjoy. The boating is fun but just sitting and viewing the scenery is enjoyable.

This is the best single attraction to visit in Oakland. It gives you a great view of the urban scene. Everyone from all walks of life make it here -- during the week or especially on weekends. Spend some time at the Lakeshore end and there are lots of great restaurants nearby. Spend some time at the downtown end and... More

It's a lake. You walk around it. You get the idea. (It helps if it's nice weather and sunny out, otherwise don't bother)

It is very pretty around the lake, and a wonderful walk, really enjoyed the area, Very urban housing, a bit crowded for me.

Bird estuary very enjoyable to watch and the Oakland building scape skyline. The 3.5 mile walk way around the Lake gave a great opportunity to enjoy the whole area and neighborhood.

We have seen Lake Merritt improve to be the nice area it is today. We visited again today and enjoyed a walk along the lake; there were people running as well as parents/guardians with their children. We enjoyed seeing that the ducks and geese enjoy the lake too. We parked in the lot by the Lake Merritt Garden Center. Parking... More
