If you are in Oakland and want to get outside, take the 3.4 mile walk around Lake Merritt. Canadian Geese are everywhere!

The efforts by conservationists to save Lake Merritt have been rewarded with recent sightings of a river otter and a stingray exploring the lake. The path around the lake is an excellent way to clear the mind and gain a perspective of the urban life of downtown Oakland.

Lake Merritt reminds one of a European village: shops, restaurants, and apartments surround a lovely, newly landscaped large lake where one least expects it. Walk or jog the paths, picnic and watch the ducks and geese, watch kids play soccer on the weekends, rent a paddle boat, meditate and soak in the sun; it all happens here! A stroll at... More

On a nice day there's no nicer place for a long walk or jog than Lake Merritt. The lake a beautiful and the nearby architecture will shock you. This is not the Oakland you hear about on TV. Bring a picnic lunch or buy something at a shop nearby. Rent a paddle boat. Take photos. Stop off for lunch around... More

There's a great main path around the lake with several extensions that lead to many interesting places. I especially liked the gardens of Lake Merritt. Free of charge with marked flowers and a wonderful bonsai garden! Very peaceful and relaxing!

Gondolas like in Venice are a real highlight! Beautiful views from Lake Chalet restaurant. Walking around the lake is relaxing and interesting viewing with many kinds of architecture.

Nice location for walking, jogging, bike riding, picnicing, people watching or just enjoying the outdoors. There are nice gardens and a play ground and Fairyland for children.

This is the part of Oakland that you won't see on the news. It's lovely. People from all walks of life hang out there to exercise, or barbecue, or feed the duck, or just get some sun. This is the real Oakland.

Loved this little trek so much we did it twice. Easy exercise, and lots to see. Tourists, residents, architecture, birds, and of course, the lake itself.
