Owner description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

Absolutely gorgeous grounds and impressive art collection. The wine was a bit underwhelming, especially after spending the. Morning at Falcor and silver oak. Gift shop was very nice as well, actually the only place I bought souvenirs from in all of napa. Take the time to go, just don't expect a lot from the wine.

There is nothing that you won't like about this place. The museum has a nice history attached to it and and there is a nice contemporary art gallery on the premises with works from different artists from within the region and some international artists. Great place to visit!

This is a nice winery to visit - complete with a modern-art gallery, tastings and nice gardens. Of course, the wine is good, too. The 5-7 mile drive through the country to arrive at the winery is beautiful and worth the visit, alone.

Getting to the winery was interesting - took about 15 minutes off the beaten Napa path, but it's worth it. A friend arranged a special tour for us with one of their educators, Michael. He was incredibly knowledgable and passionate about wine and winemaking. My fiance and I learned so much about the vineyard's history, their sustainable efforts and tried... More

The modern art collection is impressive even if you do not understand much about this kind of art. Sue gave us an informative 45 minute tour that told us more about the history of the estate and the temperament of the owner than the chemistry and mechanics that many other tours stress. The art gallery and tour are free but... More

We sampled some excellent wines, and were very impressed by the art collections displayed throughout the winery.

The Hess Winery is beautiful. We didn't actually do a wine tasting as the purpose of our visit was to see the art collection. It is very impressive.

Visited in August 2013. We were "wine tasted out" by the time we got there in the later afternoon, so we decided just to visit the art collection. It is an eclectic collection that did not really appeal to us, although I can see that it would be interesting to some. Hess is in an "out of the way" spot... More

This has to be one of the best collections of modern art I have ever seen. Spectacularly curated and displayed in an amazing space. Well done and well worth the visit.

The view is outstanding. Just look out at the mountains and you'll feel like you're in a different world. Then go in and try the wines; you'll be even happier. If you have the time, browse through the art gallery. The owner certainly has eclectic taste in his artwork. My wife and I are very glad we got to visit... More
