Owner description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

We recently spent a lovely afternoon at Hess. We purchased a "Tour of the Palate" for a 2 pm visit. Hess is off the main path and requires driving on a winding, curving road, however, once there, it is well worth the drive. Our tour guide, Michael, was fabulous---very friendly, personable and knowledgeable. After a tour of the extensive and... More

The tour of the winery with Bob was the best and most informative of all wineries. Coincidentally, it was the first winery we went to also, but no others came close to being as good.

This is a great winery; a nice mix of wine and art. We stopped here on our way to Sonoma and had a lovely afternoon. The grounds are beautiful and the museum is full of edgy, contemporary art - plus it's free! Definitely worth a visit.

Off the beaten path this incredible place is a must visit. While we were there for the wine, the fantastic art gallery must be seen. Very friendly staff - Kenzie was our guide and he was extremely knowledgeable.

Wonderful private tour and the art was amazing! We enjoyed the beautiful grounds and enjoyed a full bottle of one of the wines that evening!

Well worth a visit, both for the wine tasting and the art collection, which is free. The wine tasting alas, is not free but worth the money. My only gripe is that the artist Francis Bacon, who has six works on display, is listed as "English, born in Ireland". None of the staff present could explain this apparent contradiction to... More

This winery is a must for anyone who enjoys contemporary art. The surrounding property is beautifully landscaped. This is a rare opportunity that is free to the public.

This winery was so much fun. The art was really fun to look at as the collection had a lot of different things that were pretty cool to look at. Even if you don't frequent art museums, I think most people would see something intriguing. All the people who work there are so nice and seem so happy to be... More

We were at the end of a wine tasting experience visiting several wineries. We were quite disappointed when we pulled up to Hess only to find it closed for a private party for the employees. As our car started to pull away a man who turned out to be the wine maker rushed out and offered us to come join... More

Beautiful place, way up the hill and worth the drive. Enjoyed the small museum and the staff was extremely friendly, the wines delicious, and there is a lovely little gift shop with lots of fun items such as jewelry, books, souvenirs. Very accommodating, and we purchased several bottles from here. The grounds are just beautiful, including a beautiful outdoor fish... More
