Description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the...
Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

This is a first class art gallery worth the price of admission alone but with the added bonus of a great wine tasting experience to boot. This is a very special way to experience the Napa wine country. I keep going back.

Some of the world's finest art in a beautiful winery setting--many artists you will recognize and others which are wonderful surprises.

This was my first visit to a winery. We tried to make a reservation, but in the end just decided to drive up as we live fairly close. We were warmly greeted had a couple of tastings, I found the wines to be very good and the service was excellent. After the tasting took the tour of the winery, our... More

Eh. This place didn't do a whole lot for me. I tasted almost all of their wines (they have LOTS), but didn't find one that I loved. Everyone in my group of 6 agreed. The art was an interesting touch, but made it feel rather sterile in my book. We left early.

Loved this place. Modern art gets everyone involved. The wine was good and so were the grounds. I want to go back soon.

We called ahead and were told it was "reservation only", so we made one, but when we arrived, everyone else seemed to be making reservations on the spot. The scenery was beautiful and the art impressive, but the tasting service was very rushed with no information on the wines, history of the winery, or even attempts to encourage us to... More

Mt. Veeder is the location of this winery and the drive up the winding road and vista at the top are exquisite. The backstory of the original owner, the feat of building the stone building with these enormous redwood beams and private art collection housed here make this more than just your usual tasting experience. Yes, the wines are well... More

This winery is known also for it's art collection. Though the art is too modern for my taste it added a nice element to the visit. The drive to the vineyard and the grounds are spectacular. The wine was good though there were other vineyards whose wine was more our taste. However, it was definitely a worthwhile visit.

Went on the VIP tour being the scenes of the winery. Our guide Jan was extrebtky knowledge about both the wine and the art. The hidden secrrt at Hess is the small block Pinot noir and Cabernet. Need to try them if possible. The art is unusual just as most art is. Worth an hour out if your day

The art is worth the drive! Three floors of superb paintings, sculptures, installations in a stunning space. Art is sprinkled around the grounds, along staircases, anywhere there is space. I called the day before to make a reservation for the 11:30 tour, but, when I arrived, I was told there was no tour at 11:30! That's the only reason for... More
