Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates. « less

This was the 1st of 4 wineries we visited. We found the grounds lovely. The art collection worth seeing. The wine tasting delicious.

We did a private tasting with Larry. He gave us a tour of the art gallery and then took us through the delicious chocolate truffles & wine. We sat in a beautiful room overlooking the vineyard. A must do on any art enthusiasts trip here.

If you dig contemporary art, don't miss this venue. Kiefer in the vineyards. Polite and accommodating staff, top notch art and wine tasting, too. Not to be missed

We have always enjoyed Hess wines. Upon visiting their location in Napa we found the art work to be very disturbing, especially the heads on sticks, bodies without heads, and human carnage in the paintings. What are they trying to demonstrate? We were offended and got the impression that the winery is anti-American or barbaric. We won't be back. Too... More

The place is very, very nice. After the first rain (down pour, yes) it was very fresh and a beautiful drive up to the winery. It reminded me of Portola Valley in the Bay Area where I used to live. I did buy a wine pouring sprout there to use at home with my Costco Balsamic vinegar that always leaks... More

We were told that Hess has an extraordinary art collection, and it does; its just not our taste of art, a tad to modern for us. If modern is you thing, you'll love it. The wine was good, but compared to the other wineries we visited that trip, it was our least favorite.

Excellent location and a wonderful view! It takes a while to get there, and the road is narrow, try going during daylight, also that way you can enjoy all the views. Spend some time trying all different wines and take some home. It also has a nice museum and really nice barrel room.
