Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates. « less

The Hess Winery is very beautiful and unique. It is a lovely drive in the hills to get there. The Art Gallery was very different with something for everyone - totally not what I expected. Our tasting was very enjoyable and the garden was beautiful. A must see.

The art collection is worth a visit. There is a limit to how much wine you can taste and our group loved the change from wine to art.

We visited the Art Museum first. The pieces in this collection are unique and quite interesting. We proceeded to the tasting room where we were greeted by very professional staff who explained the type of wine they were serving us. Very knowledgeable staff.

About 9 miles northwest of Napa , up a winding road through redwood forests, ascending Mount Veeder, was The Hess Collection, a combination of Swiss owner Donald Hess’s dual passions for wine and art. The Hess family is an established name in Europe, known for its successful brewing and soft drink operations.  Donald Hess came to the United States in the... More

We know outstanding wines from Europe and California, and the luxurious tasting room at Hess offers up some of the most interesting. However, one of the best secrets in Napa is the extraordinary art collection in the same building. Eclectic, famous modern artists from around the world. Beautifully displayed. Being very involved in art and museums in New York City... More

We spent a fortune on the wine train and it was boring and the good bad. Wine tasting? Also bad. But here the explanation of how certain wines made etc and the tasting were understandable and good! And I am a ver fussy 69 year old blonde retired teacher!😄

The only pleasant thing about this place is the drive up there and the free tour. The rest is a ripoff. We recently sampled the 3 cabs tasting which is $25. The total pour of the 3 tasting amounted to 1 once of wine. I'm talking just enough to swish in your mouth, like 15 ml! The first pour I... More

Recommended by a friend as a can't miss and so glad we took her advice and didn't miss visiting Hess. The estate is beautiful, secluded with a great history. The wine is wonderful and the art collection is very impressive. We missed the last tour but enjoyed guiding ourselves for a short tour and then spent quite a bit of... More

Up a scenic drive up a mountain a little SW of Yountville, CA. Beautiful, historic facility. We signed up for the vineyard tour---had a very informative, pleasant guide (Caesar), where we learned of the harvest, types of grapes, types of wines, the growing season, the weather and topography, the history of the vineyard and winery, the history of the owner,... We booked a private tour and special wine tasting and it was wonderful. our guide Rob was very good and kept the tour interesting. By the time we finished we felt like family. The tasting in the cellar and on the 3rd floor was very nice and we got to taste a wide variation of wines. An Excellent day!
