Description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the...
Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

When we visited in early September of 2015 only one floor of three in the museum was open due to renovations. When we wanted to try a wine in the patio they advised against it due to noise and dust from the renovation. Make sure they are done before you visit.

A pleasant winery with a beautiful setting. I like the wine but more than that the winery is unique because of the fine art that they exhibit.

My wife and I visited in late August and sampled a number of wines. Samantha, our wine educator, was exceptional and really knew her stuff. The winery is set in a beautiful location, if not slightly off the beaten track. Well worth a visit.

Superb wine. Eclectic gift shop. Phenomenal art gallery. Definitely worth the drive. Don't leave Napa Valley without seeing. You'll be glad you added Hess to your itinerary !

The place is under reconstruction b/c of the former earthquake, but they've done a great job with a provisional tasting room, knowledgeable staff, beautiful gardens. The museum collection that was on view had some very good quality contemporary works, but the installation was unnecessarily cramped and dated.

We booked a private tour and tasting and had the knowledgeable Roderick as our wonderful guide. The story of the Hess winery is so fascinating that I can't believe it's not a movie. They have created a temporary tasting room because of last year's earthquake and it's quite inviting. The art is fascinating and I am only sorry that some... More

It was so good we joined the club. WOW. Cant wait to go back and see the new tasting room. Sue our hostess was outstanding. She did a great job of walking us though the wine choices. The Hess Small Block Petite Sirah was one of my fav. My wife loved the Viognier. Its a great place to taste wine... More

Loved this experience! I am more of an art lover than a wine lover, so a wine tasting situated in front of an astoundingly broad collection of works by famed modern artists was the best possible scenario for me.
