Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

Away from the crowds. The gallery was a nice compliment to wine tasting. We would recommend this to anyone.

What a fantastic place, integrating our love of wine with our love of art. The staff at Hess is helpful and friendly, and their servers in the tasting room top-notch. Hess has a eclectic art collection ( the typewriter for one) which should not be missed. Their wine is reasonably priced. The drive up can be a little adventuresome, but... More

This is an incredible winery! Yes they make awesome wine and have a "words can't describe it" art collection, but the winery is run the same way as it was a zillion years ago, the land is tended to the right way. No bad things to kill the weeds, no tractors tearing up the soil, just good old world taking... More

Secluded and beautiful location with good wines. Adjacent to a Christian Brothers seminary/retreat. Interesting art gallery at the winery. Still recovering from the earthquake last year so the "tasting room" is temporary.

My husband and I booked a visit to this winery that included tour of the beautiful garden, visited their art museum, and had wine tasting with delicious food pairings!!! Everything was elegant and very well organized. We would definitely love to come back and repeat the visit again!!

The Hess Collection is currently undergoing renovations but the art collection remains available for viewing. The art collection is perhaps the finest associated with any winery in the Napa area is worth the visit. The wine is also good.

Husband and I went for the art-not the wine. They are making repairs due to earthquake damage. Still worth the drive.

Enjoyed a week's vacation in Napa and, without a doubt, this winery was the high point of our visit. Berenice our host for a tour and tasting was very informative and personable. She described the Hess Brand, (wine and art),as 'elevated', both literally and metaphorically, which is an apt description for our experience. We went on a tour of the... More

Enjoyed the juxtaposition of old buildings with a contemporary art museum on three floors. Be sure to have enough time to enjoy both. The wine was very good and reasonably priced, so I bought 3 bottles to take home. Was disappointed that the red was not what I requested. Lesson learned - check your package before leaving a winery.

The wine is nothing too exciting, but the buildings are beautiful, the art is amazing, and the gardens are inspiring. They have come back together nicely after the earthquake damage.
