Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates. « less

Loved the art gallery..unfortunately we tasted outside due to earthquake damage. Place was still very lovely. Unfortunately the person pouring the wine was super busy and didn't realize we were wine lovers.

This is a beautiful spot, with great views, great wine and great art. We spent the previous day biking in Napa. Chatting with another couple at the hotel introduced us to Hess. We are glad we did. The winery is up in the hills with gorgeous scenery. The art museum is all modern art and was one of the highlights... More

As wine club members, we are welcome to four complimentary wine tastings when we visit the vineyard. Even if we were not members, we'd most likely do this tasting again. It's very different from our first visit to Hess several years ago. Back then when we visited in November the tasting was in the tasting room. This time around we... More

We enjoyed the wine tasting and gallery. The earthquake in Napa did significant damage to their winery with great loss of wine in their storage areas, but they have bounced back!

We visited on a gloriously sunny day, and had a tour with another two people, so it felt like a private tour. There's a relatively interesting video, then a brief tour of some vines from different decades. The modern/abstract art collection is cool - quirky and interesting. The main building is magnificent, and the history of the place is fascinating.... More

Very nice tasting. Outside under an arbor. We were shown the pink sand -- wine that spilled from the earthquake. Don't miss seeing the art displays. Especially the gas typewriter !!!

We really enjoyed our visit to Hess. The staff was very knowledgeable and willing to share their history of the winery and vineyards. The art museum is interesting, but a little on the dark side in my opinion. Wish I could find someone to pay me for three painted ladders or toast rocks in a kiln and call it art.... More
