Owner description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

This one is off the beaten path but well worth the drive. Actually the drive is beautiful and part of the experience. Good wine. Beautiful property. Interesting gallery.

Museum and grounds were nice, wine was just ok. No food either during tasting and a weird checkout experience where they didn't want to apply the cost of the tasting to our purchase after telling us that when we arrived.

My daughter and I came for a wine and cheese tasting + museum tour - the title of the package was "VIP" but I kind of ignored that, I thought it was hype. But from the moment we arrived, we were indeed treated like VIPs. Our knowledgable and enthusiastic host Sue greeted us and asked what we wanted to see... More

I attended here with a friend as part as my visit to San Francisco. The wine selections were vast, and the eight wines I tried, were pleasant. We selected a tasting of 4 wines for a cost of $20 each, and then selected 8 wines to taste and which we shared. Thus we tried a larger range of wines .... More

What a great art collection! We enjoyed strolling through this amazing collection. Off the wall and fun! The winery located on the grounds of a monastery offered amazing views of the valley. Oh yes, the wine was wonderful !!

The art collection was eclectic and varied. Something to appeal to every taste. The wines were nice, but not necessarily something to write home about. Nevertheless, a nice way to spend some time - although a trek to get there.

We chose Hess Collection Winery and art museum because we wanted to head to a vineyard that had more than just a wine tasting. The modern art is such an added attraction. Artists represented are Frank Stella, Motherwell, Rauschenberg, and others. He has 4 or 5 pieces per artist in the gallery. We visited on a rainy Friday and had... More
