Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

Of course we could have gone from Santa Rosa to Napa and then up - but NOOOO - we went up Trinity to Mt. Veeder to Redwood. WOW, a very curvy, narrow road that you need to FOCUS on. We were happy when Hess came into view - just to know that there were other humans in the area. What... More

Good to average wines reasonably priced. The art display in their museum is very good. The property is beautiful and scenic. Tastings are reasonably priced for fine wines.

We enjoyed this winery. The art was contemporary and the wine was very good. Our host, at the moment I can't think of his name, spent one on one time with us while sampling the different wines. He was very informative and pleasant.

The art was awesome - my wife doesn't really like museums and was totally thrilled with the amount and the style. It created discussion and was, at times, interactive. The wine was great too. We bought a tasting and our hostess poured two more for me because I was interested. We talked about Donald Hess, the art collection, the wine... More

I fell in love with Cabernet Sauvignon when our waiter at our fav Italian restaurant recommended the Hess Private Select Hess as a pairing for my meal. So when planning our trip to NAPA, the Hess Collection Winery was the first on my list. We scheduled an afternoon tasting and I purchased the all-CAB tasting and my companions purchased the... More

My husband and I have been dedicated Hess drinkers for years now. So when we had an extra hour to spare we of course headed to Hess Winery. I have to admit initially I was looking more forward to the wine tasting than the collection but I was pleasantly surprised by the art exhibit. We had an incredible host Orlando... More

A most amazing art collection - you will want to spend some time here. While you are on the road to the winery just remember - YOU ARE NOT LOST. The road is narrow and tree lined, and you will think you are on the wrong road. You are not. Great place.

There are 450 wineries in Napa Valley, but this is a must-see for art lovers. The owner has amassed an impressive collection of contemporary art about 25% of which is on display in a large gallery on two floors. Free tour of the historic vineyard, beautiful garden and winery. The only charge is for tastings - a great variety of... More

i like going to Hess. The wine is super, the museum is great and the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. It is on Mt. Veeder which is out of the way and takes a while to get there. But it is worth the drive. The place is amazing. I like the great variety of their wines. The usual tasting... More

Great wine! Ground floor tasting room was more intimate than the newer third floor among the museum art, but glad to see them coming back after the earthquake last year!
