An unexpected gem

A small but beautifully hung gallery in a wonderful setting with interesting local and wider artists and photographs. Well worth a visit although it is expensive for what it is.

The galleries are filled with local painters from the museums permanent collection. There is a room of photographers with a local connection. Very pleasant afternoon

This gallery is housed in a lovely large building, but there's not much art to see. And what's there is not exceptional. There's a second floor, but it was closed to set up a new show. The person at the desk doesn't mention this when she sells you a ticket. She does tell you there is additional art at a... More

I usually keep up a membership here as they are close to my house and have wonderful shows, especially featuring CA artists. Besides their downtown location they have La Mirada which was a house built around one of the earliest adobes in the area. The extension for art that they added is just lovely. Be sure to ask for a... More

Small and not very comprehensive this museum could learn from other medium towns how to support the arts.

small gallery that does a good job with the display of their art. Mixers are fun there but the art is just ok, of course they compete with alot of galleries on the peninsula

I had a few hours to spare on a Saturday morning in Monterey and I discovered the Monterey Museum of Art. I was only one of about five people in the whole museum when I visited. If you are a student and have your I.D. handy, definitely use it and you can waive the $10 adult admission fee. Despite the... More

Go for the behind the scenes house tour if you can. Even without it the displays are neat and in a beautiful setting. Spend some time exploring the grounds.

The collections and what was on view made it clear that local artists are the focus. The Monterey Hospital also has a wonderful collection of paintings hung in each corridor and employs a fulltime curator.
