You can enter an auction for miniature paintings by local artists at the end of the year. You buy tickets and put them in the box for the artwork that you like. I won one and they sent it to me for $12. It's a painting by a nationally known artist.

The museum's use of a former estate offers a variety of paintings and artworks, some displayed as part of the original owners' collection. The newer galleries offer more current artists' installations. A nonstop video of the artist setting up his work was included at an art station for kids and adults, inspired by what they just saw. Having a very... More

Small show of central California landscapes, very beautiful. Photos of Monterey adobes. Mid-century Japanese prints. The real surprise was at the La Mirada Annex at the Community College--a wonderful old house and a terrific gallery addition. Great architecture. The Andrew Schoultz show of murals and paintings was breathtaking.

Museum was near the Marriott Hotel so I walked over. It is across the street from the very lovely city hall. The museum is small but with an interesting standing collection. There was a contest on that day and I won a very lovely coffee table book and everyone was very nice and informational. A great way to kill an... More

I really enjoyed this museum. It has two locations, where you can enter both locations with the same admission ticket. The collection is not too large but you can easily spend an hour or two in each location. They had some Japanese artist display with salt, it was amazing.

While we didn't go here this trip, I love the horse mural outside. It is at least two stories high and really catches the eye. next time we will visit the museum :) Drive by to check it out.

Viewing the floor work of art is a joy in itself. Seeing the young artists downstairs trying to duplicate some portion of it is even more joyous. The exhibit will remain until August 25. This museum has only increased in the quality and extent of its' offerings in the last few years. If you are a local, watch for "free"... More

This small museum has a wide variety of permanent works as well as rotating exhibits. While we were in Monterey, we visited it for the first time. It is well appointed. They had a good show of Matisse's works as well as a nice showing of Van Hoesen's pieces which we thoroughly enjoyed. They also have a few sculptures by... More

What a great small art museum with a significant collection of early California painters, many of whom had called Monterey home at some point in their lives.

Well worth the visit. Very comfortable and attractive building; friendly staff. Surprising display of the work of Henri Matisse. Display of the work of Johnny Apodaca, some of whose work reminds me of Gregory Kondos and Wayne Thiebaud. Nice and thorough display of the work of Beth Van Hoesen (etchings and drawings), which I especially liked.
