This is the first time I have been back in years, and it has gotten ridiculously touristy. I think that there are better places in Monterey to visit to see the city. We briefly stopped and walked around but didn't seem much worth staying.

First, I've been to Monterey before, and think it is absolutely beautiful. This trip through the area, my son and I decided to check out Cannery Row. Now, if you're into lots of boutiques, gift shops, restaurants, candy shops, etc., you'll probably find it delightful. It's way too touristy for our tastes. In fact, we had a way better time... Just a really nice place to dip in and out of the sunshine, exploring all the shops and galleries, or sitting by the statue and beautifully planted garden area dedicated to John Steinbeck.

Love the history of Cannery Row, but the shops and restaurants are high priced and filled with touristy items. Once you have seen it, there isn't much to go back for. That being said, if you do go; rent a bike and follow the trail to Pacific Grove and/or Old Monterey. It's a beautiful trail along the ocean. Take the... More

It's your typical touristy spot but take a little time and check it out, especially if you need souvenirs or gifts. There is of course the gem "Monterey Aquarium" and a few stores are worth checking out like "Monterey's Tasty Olive Bar" if you like olive oils & balsamic vinegar you MUST go here, they have so many flavors. YUM!!

We found the restaurants to be good casual oceanfront dining but the shopping was disappointing. Mostly average tourist shops. Nothing unique, except for the antique mall which was awesome. There are a lot of empty lots and the shore is grossly under-utilized. Hope there is new development in the works as this is a lovely area.

Not very impressed and thought it was tacky and very expensive. Most of the food outlets were not vey high quality and the whole place has gone sharply down hill since my last visit 6 years ago.

Where Cannery Row is now used to be Sardine canneries when I was a child growing up nearby. Now, instead of the smelly fish factories, there are plaques naming them on the sidewalks at their respective past locations. John Steinbeck still has a big presence in the Monterey wharf area. There is a bronze statue of he and his friends... More

Of course, this used to be a fish canning area but it is now a tourist draw. It was not overcrowded the day we went, but we were there on a weekday in mid-May.
