Great little museum in a historic logging town. I love learning about the history of the places I visit. When you see the names of the young girls who lived here etched (by them) into their bedroom window pane, you’ll have a good chuckle.

The Kelley House is a great piece of history. You can tour the main floor and upstairs and see how people lived. There is a touch screen TV with a multi-slide where you can read all about the Kelley family and ancestors. The docent was very helpful. It's worth taking some time to walk through it.

I don't know how they managed to designate this whole town as a living monument to 1900 but architecturally they did and they express that with pride, not with snooty attitudes. It's a wonderful little museum which exudes pride and heritage. I'm not sure the average teenager would love it but the average grownup even the least interested in history, architecture, sociology or killing time until that sunset happens on the promontory overlooking the ocean. Just spectacular. I wish I had more time to spend.

We happened to read about the guided tour of the town that runs every Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 am for $10/person. It was a very interesting tour and really makes you appreciate the town and its history. Afterwards, walking around, you feel like you are visiting a town from a book where you know the stories of all the characters. If you are not able to make the guided tour, I believe you can also do a recorded tour.

We enjoyed a two hour tour Christmas morning offered by the Kelly House. It could not have been better. We walked the town, learned the history, and discovered more history than we could have imagined. A very, very good place with good docents.

The Kelley House Museum and associated research center is a wonderful haven for those who love the unique and the history of any town. The Kelley House was restored with passionate Village energy in the '70s and remains the only place to find each weekly Mendocino Beacon since publication. The locals who volunteer are always happy to give you the long or short of it in the museum tour and have the tales of a wild lumber town and the hippie invasion to tell! The passion of the Docents make them a great information source for the must do and eat in town. Don't see museam and walk on by. See the best of all Mendocino and go on in. Please leave donation of course. Museum is open on Thurs thru Sun on our 4/2007 visit with limited hours. Please check. The research office is open Mon - Fri and yet the carpets were needing cleaning on our thursday of visit. In other words confirm hours. Megan will be happy to hear you came, just tell her Caren sent you. Oh, I forgot the authentic period antiques for those who cherish or even just kind of like antiques. Go here after lunch at the Mendocino Hotel for the best of historical flashbacks!

We were in town for 24 hours. We were looking forward to visiting the Kelley House before we left the area. The person who was supposed to open the museum on Saturday, September 21, 2019 did not show up. We were disappointed along with others waiting outside. We tried calling the phone number associated with the museum and had hoped someone would pick up to let us see the museum. I hope in the future, someone will be able to be called right away and plan for a back up person to open the museum. We were visiting the area just for the day and really wanted to see the museum.

We happened to see a brochure for the tour as we walked from dinner on a Friday evening. Having no special plans for Saturday, we decided to take the two hour tour. Jane was our guide, and she was wonderful. Though we have been in Mendocino before, we'd never seen this tour listing. Well worth the $10/person fee.

Great way to learn about local history. Very nice docent gave us some interesting and little known stories about some of the historic characters from times gone by.

My husband and I made a trip down the Pacific Coast Highway from Seattle to San Diego. We used Trip Advisor to determine where to stay while on the road. Mendocino was a favorite of ours. Take the walking tour. It was a highlight for us! And at $10 for the tour definitely worth the money!
