Melrose Avenue's Groundlings have been practicing their high-octane brand...

Melrose Avenue's Groundlings have been practicing their high-octane brand of anything-goes improvisation for nearly three decades. Audiences know the group for their wacky sketch comedy and lightning audience participation rounds, but for aspiring comedians and writers it's the Groundlings School that's the real draw. With courses in beginning and advanced improv, sketch and monologue comedy, the school has trained several generations of young wits. Its alumni includes a laundry list of "SNL"-ers (Phil Hartman, Julia Sweeney, Will Ferrell, Laraine Newman), Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson and Emmy-winning "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow. The theatre was also the home of Paul Reubens' early, raunchier version of "Pee-Wee's Playhouse." With pristine standards and a pool of hundreds of talented newcomers to draw from, the troupe offers some of the quickest, cleverest improv in town, cozily presented in their own 100-seat theater.

I am a big fan of stand up comedians and improv. I love things like SNL and Who's Line Is It Anyway. I did look at going to the places such as The Comedy Store. However, I really wanted some group improv. I was torn between Second City, Upright Citizen Brigade and The Groundlings. The reviews for Cooking with Gas... More

A great show and one you can go back to see again and again since it will be different every time! The show starts each half with ideas thrown out by the audience to the cast. The first improv idea will be re-visited throughout the night, making the audience feel part of the show, being "in on" the joke. It's... More

Bought tickets on a whim after our initial evening plans didn't work out. WONDERFUL change of plans. The live comedy acts we saw were great....fast-paced, wide variety of skits, and excellent delivery by the actor comedians. At $20 per ticket, this was an excellent value. If you don't like the skit you're watching, give it a minute and you'll get... More

I was visiting LA and saw "Cooking With Gas" with special guests Leslie Bibb and Sam Rockwell. Also included Michael McDonald, Mindy Sterling, Jim Rash, Tim Bagley, Ariane Price, and Ryan Gaul. Directed by Mitch Silpa. Great show. It was hilarious and the environment is very intimate - very small venue and you're right next to the stage, no matter... More

Went and saw the late show on a Friday night, and this was honestly the funniest improv I have ever seen, live or on TV. It fills up quick, so would recommend purchasing tickets ahead of time, but so worth it if you enjoy laughing your head off!!

Awesome theatre dedicated to Phil Hartman. Young comedians with much talent and unique skits. Small lobby with many pictures of many comedians from their much younger past and I heard when many got their start including Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wigg, Kathy Griffith, Phil Hartman, Will Farrell, Chris Katan and so any other stars of past Saturday Night Live. No alcohol... More

we took a two week action packed vacation. we saw and did a great many things but when it comes to telling friends about our vacation, seeing the Groundlings perform improve was such an overwhelmingly positive experience that it is usually the lead vacation story. we laughed during the entire performance. the theatre is very small and intimate with no... Been there several times. Always a good show. You sit 20 feet from the stage and feel like you are part of the show. Reservations recommender as it can be busy. Reasonable $$....

I was checking out Tripadvisor for something to do for a last minute trip to LA and saw "Groundlings". I knew I had heard of that name and was delighted to discover what it was. Somehow it had never occured to me to check out a comedy show during our visits but I'm glad we did. The performances were hilarious... More
