There are markers all the way from the visitors' center down to the lake indicating the former depth of the lake. It has been heavily drained by the city of Los Angeles over the decades.

Only thing that was sad was that they ran out of Junior Rangers Badges, so my kids were disappointed. Other than that it was very informative, and the exhibits were great.

Definitely recommend a stop here if you plan to explore the lake area especially hiking out to the tufas. The center has some great exhibits that talk about the lake's history and future as well as showing how the tufas are formed. It sports clean restrooms and a nice little gift shop. In addition there is a park ranger there... More

The Mono Basin Visitor center is a bit of history and explanations of a unique piece of California. Let me explain. The history of Mono lake can be interesting for the history buffs. The early people living here under the harsh conditions of the area give a vista into another era. The features that have been carved under the lake... More

The center is a great place to look around. After a great meal at Bodie Mikes, it is fun to drive out there and watch the sun go down and stretch your legs before retiring to your room. It is a beautiful location.

The area is very scenic and at first it appears to be just another nice lake. Visiting the visitors center was an eye opening experience and great presentations on the geological and environmental issues here were informative. Static displays and movies explain how wildlife adapt to the unique surroundings and actually thrive. There is also great opportunities for photos and... More

What a great stop. Interesting movies, exhibits, book store and great view plus friendly and helpful staff. And all for free! Well, other than your tax dollar! Take the extra time to drive 6 miles north and turn east on Cemetery Rd., go less than a 1/2 mile to the park. Park your car and walk the boardwalk down to... More

This is a nice little surprise on Mono Lake. Not of much scale but certainly interesting. Nature does some strange things and this is one that is worth seeing. As long as you are there you should take a look.

A very good centre with lots of exibits and explanations about the ecology of the lake and its history. Good, though not close, views of the lake and a shop where you could buy books and guides to the local wildlife
