This institute is in a great location overlooking the ocean and in an area that seems to be full of educational/research institutions. It is within a short driving distance of the Torrey Pines beach area.

I returned to The Salk recently, just to renew old memories. I had been here several times at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, to discuss vaccines with Dr. Salk. The view from his office was incredible, and the artwork in his office, done by his wife, was impressive. They are both gone, now, but returning to the Institute, at... More

Got a great tour of their Light Microscopy Facilities! Took some fun pictures at the reflecting pool, not really a good tourist spot, unless you are a scientist!

This building has a beautiful marble walkway with water running through the middle, a view of the ocean at the end. Great design and a real treat when there is a beautiful sunset - plus there will be plenty of parking after hours.

I went to the Scripps Aquarium that is part of the large salk institute. I was impressed to learn that the institute is researching the possibilities of finding new cures for cancer in the sea. This aquarium is not one of the huge ones, but has enough to keep adults and children interested.

On the basis you are reading this, it is because you have at least a slight interest in architecture. Point 1 - you would be crazy to miss visiting it. Secondly, presumably it must be some days before you are in San Diego, and you are looking for things to do. Having decided to do it, BOOK NOW. There is... More

Enter the main courtyard from the street side to smell the citrus trees first. The waterfall area is a great place to enjoy a bagged lunch or sushi from a local store. If architecture is not a stand-alone attraction for you, try out the views from the adjacent glider port (where there is often free parking to be found as... More

Unique blend of architecture and biological science information. The tour started with a 15 minute info session by one of the interns and then an architect takes you through the Louis Kahn building. It was great to see the building as a work environment, to experience it as an actualization of its purpose. The tour guide was able to point... More

The Louis Kahn architecture, with the elegance of the Parthenon on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, is remarkable: Certainly one of the most important buildings in the United States.
