Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this famous group of buildings is a temple celebrating the triumph of science and rationalism as one of the pinnacles of human achievement. Although some find the concrete slab construction to be cold and intimidating, others like me find the simplicity and relationship of the structure to the physical site to be exhilarating, with its central... Incredible architectural tour (Free!) of this unique Louis Kahn designed facility for scientific research. Very specialized and "thinking outside the box" approach in the design of this world-class facility. Especially breathtaking from an architectural point of view, with unparalleled views of the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! More

We had an excellent architectural tour of the Institute property and buildings that was led by a female architect who was well-versed and very friendly. A brief survey of our group found that we consisted of a few architects and engineers, along with various other backgrounds (like ours) and one neuro-scientist who works there in one of the labs. The... More

This is my favorite architectural site in San Diiego. Very modern with a lot of concrete. The setting is magnificent, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The fact that it is one of the world's premier science labs adds to the aura. More

Named after the scientist famous for the polio vaccine, this is a poured-concrete building complex near the Glider Park above Black's Beach. Worth a stroll, but best to include a walk to the Black's beach bluffs and the gliders launching off of the cliff. An access road to Black's Beach lines up with the end of the same road as... More

Although the rule is to register online two days in advance, give them a call and you may get to go on the same day if the tour isn't full (one tour a day, at noon). Leave at least 15 minute to park and try to find the entrance. Visit on a nice sunny day with good visibility -- the... More
