One of only two World Heritage Sites in Bangladesh (Sunderbans is the other) this place is impressive even it its ruined state. It displayed the extent of Mahayana Buddhism in Bengal from the 7th century onwards, Somapura Mahavira, or the Great Monastery, was a renowned intellectual centre until the 12th century. Its layout perfectly adapted to its religious function, this... More

Dullest monument in Bangladesh. Extensive area offer almost nothing to see and it certainly will not save the museum. Public transport is poorly accessible.

This place is a nice one day trip away from Bogra. When i arrived there i was simply stunned by this beautiful ruin. I spent the whole afternoon at the site to relax and read a book while enjoying the beautiful sights of the ruin. The best part of this Unesco world heritage site is that I was the only... More

The ruins are very interesting to be visited. The atmosphere is good, quiet and sensibly differents than the other I visited in the North of the Bangladesh. Plan enough time because the site is very large.

I was a bit hesitant at first because the guide books tend to portray the ruins as simplistic. However, the monastery grounds are quite large and the ruins are rather big. Bring an umbrella to fight the sun as there is no shade!

To get there take a bus or train to Joypurhat and then another bus to Paharpur (20-30 mins) from where you will need to take a rickshaw to the ruins (make sure you agree the price in advance as we found the rickshaw drivers there to be a little unscrupulous with tourists - should be Tk10-20 total). Entrance fee to... More

Paharpur is about 250km from Dhaka via Bogora, which can be a good place to stay the night. The site is a well spread out UNESCO Heritage site , where excavation is done in patches, depending on funds, I understand. Its one of the 5 great Universities built by the Pala dynasty kings in 781 - 821 AD. You need... More
