The tour they give here is so rich in history, humor, and excitement. The rail road took 15 years to build, and was built by hand. The mining caves are still in the process of being dug and they have many relics found from the mining days. If you want a real taste of what Julian is made of and... More

Definitely recommend this tour of an old gold mine to anyone who really wants to learn about Julian's history. This is a family-run business, with the tours run by the landowner, who has been restoring this mine for several decades. Greg is extremely knowledge about the mine specifically and Julian history generally. Moreover, he somehow managed to treat our tour... More

This Train Tour at Smith Ranch is super fun and informative! My husband and I had so much fun! The owner of the ranch welcomed us at the entrance and led us to the train stop, where we got our train ticket and listened to a short introduction of the ride. The train track was built by the owner of... More

I was not sure what to expect on this is very family friendly but is also fun. And the host are very knowledgable and the thing is hands on, and there true stories about their family being early gold miners are really nice. Do note that the train track is hand built by the owner of the ranch. He knows... More

Great visit. Very interesting insight into gold mining. Didn't travel very far into the actual mine but this didn't matter at all. Glen our 'guide' was brilliant and certainly knew his subject very well.

I was a little worried about walking the mine because I had several foot surgeries and don't walk too well. It was an easy walk and very cool (temperature) inside.

My family has a long-time love of Julian and when we go we love to visit Smith Ranch Railroad. The Smith family is one of the most genuine, accommodating, beautiful families you will ever meet. They make wonderful hosts for this attraction! The railroad itself is a fun and interesting experience. For the little ones it is a fun railroad... More

Fun, informative. Fun activities for kids 4 and over. Adults learn from presentation, kids get bored on talking part but can walk around so if parents keep them quiet it's ok. Not real gold mining.
