This was really fun. We took our 2 and 3 year old boys and they had a blast. You take a short "train" ride, visit the mine, pan for "gold", and pump water from a well. It's very hands on. I would not recommend this for just adults, but for younger kids, it's great. More

It is amazing what this family has done with this mine. Really teaching experience and kids love the train. It is a must when visiting Julian. More

We got to spend a great Saturday in Julian last weekend thanks to Smith Ranch. The family run gold mine and historical experience was the perfect centerpiece to a day in the quaint mountain town. The hour and a half tour was hands on, educational and fun. There was a train ride, rope climb and slide, mine tour, well water... More

We had a great time riding the train at the Smith Ranch. They gave us many historical facts, spoiled us with hot cider and the kids got to walk on the rope bridge! Our guide was personable and patient. He mingled his vast history knowledge with cute trivia facts. Our whole family had a great time and would go back... More

I checked this place out online and the reviews from Tripadvisor and others seemed really great. Many wrote it was the best thing on their trip. My thought afterwards was these people must not get out much. I enjoy a variety of activities and love family things we all can enjoy but felt this place was over-hyped and I expected... More

Enjoyable, educational, interesting. Very family oriented. A bit heavy handed on the family values for me but I would highly recommend for families with kids ages 5 and up. More

We almost didn't go....thought it was more for the kids. But when we were in downtown Julian we ran into this cheerful guy in a train engineer's outfit from the Ranch making reservations during Gold Rush Days; after talking to him he convinced us we would enjoy it. We thought the price was a little steep, but after all was... More

This was originally an "add on" activity to our trip to Julian, but it ended up being the highlight of the trip! The train ride was adored by both our 4 & 8 yr old sons, and the driver included a lot of interesting facts for the adults as well. I also liked that the view on the way up... More
