Description: MacPhail Family Wines is situated on James' property and is therefore not...
MacPhail Family Wines is situated on James' property and is therefore not open to the public, but welcomes its valued patrons by appointment only - Monday through Saturday. For a reservation, visit our page on Cellar Pass.James MacPhail, producer of small-batch Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Rose from the Sonoma Coast, Russian River and Anderson Valley, developed his own customized winery in Healdsburg. It was completed in time to receive the 2008 harvest - MacPhail Family Wines' sixth vintage. "This little winery allows me to fine tune my winemaking, crafting small lots with traditional techniques, minimal intervention and hands-on attention," says James. "My use permit is for only 5,000 cases, so production will remain small in scale and personal in style."The 4,400 square foot structure, bathed in natural light, houses 10 small (6-ton) French oak and stainless steel fermentors. In the barrel room, 270 oak barrels from 14 French coopers stack to the ceiling. James installed corridors of river rock between the barrel rows - "a nod to Burgundy." Outside the winery is a unique constructed wetland that reclaims all of the winery waste water.Coming Soon - In mid 2014 we will be opening a Tasting Lounge at The Barlow in Sebastopol, and we look forward to being a bit more accessible to visitors. Visit us now for a chance to see the winery before the Tasting Lounge opens!

A friend of mine and I visited this tasting room recently. We both have tried many winery's versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Oregon down to the Santa Barbara but in the end this became our favorite. Note that the tasting room is in Sebastopol, not Healdsburg. The Barlow is an new up-and-coming destination for foodies and wine lovers.... More

This winery is located along with many other food and wine spots in the attractive Barlow development in Sebastopol. It makes only Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs mostly from the Russian River area, but also from as far away as Oregon and the Central Coast. Over the years we have tried these two vareties at many tasting rooms, but after today... More

If you are looking for a hidden gem and small wine production, I recommend that you schedule a visit to MacPhail Wines in Healdsburg. Down-to-earth, genuine hospitality and B-I-G and delicious pinot noirs. Should be at the top of anyone planning a trip to northern Sonoma County and fans of bold Pinot Noirs. We love visiting Jim, Lauren and the... More

Good friends of ours had been raving about - and ordering from - this winery for the past two years, so we jumped at the chance to visit it while staying in Healdsburg last week. This winery is not open to the public (Yet! They are in the middle of building a tasting room space at The Barlow), but James... More

Located just a few minutes southwest of Healdsburg, CA is this newer modern winery. James MacPhail produces wines that are getting rave reviews. Go to the MacPhail Family Wines web site and read what the experts are saying and you will see why I gave 5 stars to this winery.
