There was a spot we found on this road, not 2 miles from getting on it, that felt we were at the center of the Universe. “Off the beaten track”

Wish we had days and days to keep going! We stopped and hiked the Homestead trail/Big tree Loop. Awesome! Both trails were beyond words....Maybe on weekends the traffic on Mattole would be bothersome, but on a winter weekday, no traffic, only silence. Wonderful!!! Give yourself all day to explore! Matthole Road itself is spectacular. More

“Great if no fog.”

Loved that it was so beautiful and off-the-beaten-track. However, the part of the road from Ferndale to Petrolia was poorly paved, many twists and turns. I would not recommend doing this is the fog as we did. More

My husband and I drove the whole route about a year ago, and I agree with everything in the review below! It's a gorgeous drive with a variety of lovely scenery.
