The small sub-mission of San Antonio de Pala (called an 'asistencia' in its Spanish title) is an outlying Catholic Church depending from Mission San Luis Rey de Francia near Oceanside 20 miles to the west (or as the Spanish put it, 7 leagues to the west, or one day's horseback ride to the west. It was founded in 1816, and... More

Several reviews have noted that TripAdvisor has the wrong city for this church. It is indeed in Pala, not Escondido. (TripAdvisor: please update the city on the listing). If you visit, you'll find a quaint church still true to its original mission, to serve the local Pala tribe. The church is long, narrow and dark, but stay a while, and... More

We enjoyed the mission and the grounds. It is a very historic and peaceful place to spend an hour. The flowers and statues are well maintained.

Wonderful old Church, which is still in use today. Don't miss this place. Be sure to take the waik in the cemetery. Whenever I have out of town visitors I take them there. They also have a gift shop and another area with gardens, for which they charge a small fee.

THIS IS LOCATED IN PALA, CA NOT ESCONDIDO. A great little mission that still operates as one. Bell tower is fantastic as the person who build it planted a cactus near the cross on the top of tower. The museum was not open as we were there on Tuesday. The sign says Thurs-Sat. In one part there is a school... More

Another unlisted California Mission near the Pala California area. Nice staff and well taken care of with pride. Great grounds, museum and Church. Well worth your time to see.

Well worth a visit, this is a functioning church still ministering to various tribes within the region. There is a museum which was not open when we visited, a cemetery , bell tower and chapel.

This small mission church is quite a contrast to San Luis Rey. The free-standing bell tower which overlooks the cemetery adjacent to the mission buildings is unique and a local landmark. The entire complex is fully restored and beautifuly maintined. It is a quiet location and inspiring if you just sit in the church and contemplate, or in the cemetery.... More

The mission is beautifully restored and well worth the drive and $5 admission. Nice to see that the church is still active. The church and grounds tour takes about 30 minutes.

If you are expecting a huge cathedral or an architectural masterpiece, you are destined for disappointment. Honestly it is just like any other small rural church that you would see throughout the southwestern U.S. from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, to California. Only this one has a gift shop!! It is NOT one of the 21 original missions of Southern California,... More
